Chapter 8 - The Reckoning

The door didn't open—the heavy brass deadbolt held firm.

Through the crack beneath the door, a shadow moved. The light from the hallway was partially blocked by someone standing directly outside my room.

"Miss Vance?" Marcus’s voice came through the wood, calm, polite, and terrifyingly smooth. "Mr. Langum asked me to check on you. He said you seemed distressed after the gala."

My breath caught in my throat. I backed away slowly, my bare feet making no sound against the thick Persian rug.

My mind raced. Marcus was Richard’s shadow. He had been with Richard for over a decade. He had access to every security code, every camera feed, every transport manifest. If Marcus had orchestrated my father’s murder and used Tristan as the fall guy, he knew the net was closing around him the moment Tristan was arrested.

"I'm fine, Marcus," I called out, forcing my voice to sound sleepy and irritated. "I was just getting ready for bed. Tell Richard I'll see him at breakfast."

A beat of heavy silence followed.

"I'm afraid that won't be possible, Daphne," Marcus said, his tone shedding all pretenses of warmth. "You see, Richard just received an urgent security notification from his private server. Someone accessed Arthur Vance’s encrypted deathbed telemetry from this suite twenty minutes ago."

The sound of a key slipping into the lock sent adrenaline surging through my veins.

*He had a master key.*

I didn't scream. I didn't freeze.

I grabbed my heavy marble bedside lamp, ripped the cord from the wall, and ducked behind the thick velvet drapery beside the window just as the door swung open.

Marcus stepped into the room.

He was still wearing his tailored black suit from earlier, but the subservient posture was completely gone. In his right hand was a sleek, silenced semi-automatic pistol. His eyes swept across the empty bed, then landed on the open laptop on the desk, where the audio reconstruction file was still displayed on the screen.

"Smart girl," Marcus muttered to himself, stepping toward the desk. "Just like your father. Too smart for your own good."

I waited for the exact second his back was turned to the curtains.

With all the strength in my body, I stepped out from the drapes and swung the heavy marble lamp with both hands, striking Marcus squarely across the side of his head.

The crack was sickening.

Marcus let out a muffled grunt and stumbled forward, crashing into the desk. The laptop tumbled to the floor with a loud crunch, and his gun clattered across the hardwood toward the bed.

He wasn't unconscious.

Gasping, blood dripping from his temple, Marcus rolled over, his face twisted in feral rage. He lunged toward me, his hands reaching for my throat. "You little bitch—"

Before his fingers could touch my skin, a roar like a wounded beast tore through the doorway.

A massive blur of charcoal and steel crossed the room with blinding speed. Richard struck Marcus like a freight train, slamming the younger man into the stone hearth of the fireplace.

The impact shook the room.

Richard didn't use a weapon. His bare hands locked around Marcus’s throat, lifting him several inches off the floor, slamming him repeatedly against the stone until the drywall cracked.

"Richard, stop!" I screamed, terrified he was going to kill him with his bare hands right in front of me. "Richard, he has the evidence! Don't kill him!"

Richard froze.

His suit jacket was torn at the shoulder, his hair disheveled, and his eyes were completely black with a terrifying, primal bloodlust I had never seen before. He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving, his fingers dug so deep into Marcus’s neck that the man was turning blue, clawing desperately at Richard’s iron forearms.

Slowly, Richard turned his head to look at me.

His gaze swept over me frantically—checking my face, my arms, my bare feet—looking for blood, looking for injury. When he saw that I was unharmed, the tension in his massive frame eased by a fraction of an inch, though the fury in his eyes remained lethal.

Richard slammed Marcus back onto the floor.

Marcus collapsed into a heap, choking, coughing up blood, clutching his shattered ribs.

Two armed security guards rushed into the room with weapons drawn, their eyes wide as they took in the carnage.

"Search him," Richard commanded, his voice cold, steady, and vibrating with an authority that left no room for error. "Strip him of every device, every key, every credential. Lock him in the basement holding room. If he loses consciousness before the federal marshals arrive, wake him up."

"Yes, Mr. Langum," the lead guard barked, dragging Marcus out of the room by his collar.

The door shut. The chaos subsided into a heavy, ringing silence.

Richard stood in the center of my bedroom, his knuckles bloody, his chest rising and falling in deep, ragged breaths. He looked at the shattered lamp, the overturned chair, and then at me.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice raw and trembling with an emotion so fierce it broke my heart.

"No," I whispered. "I'm not hurt."

In three long strides, Richard closed the distance between us.

He didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, wrapping his massive frame around me with an intensity that took my breath away. He buried his face in my neck, holding me so tightly against his chest that I could feel the frantic, terrified pounding of his heart against my ribs.

"I almost lost you," he whispered against my skin, his voice cracking. "God help me, Daphne... I was downstairs in the study when the server alarm tripped. If I had been ten seconds later..."

"You were here," I said, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder, letting my own tears finally fall. "You came for me. You always come for me."

He pulled back slightly, his large hands cupping my face, his thumbs gently wiping away my tears. His bloody knuckles contrasted sharply against my pale skin, a vivid reminder of the violence he had unleashed to protect me.

"Marcus was the inside man," I said, looking into his eyes. "He worked with Julian Sterling. Tristan was just their disposable pawn. Marcus gave Tristan the clearance to bypass the firewalls."

"I know," Richard said darkly. "Julian Sterling’s jet was grounded at JFK twenty minutes ago. Federal agents are raiding the Sterling headquarters right now. Marcus gave up the encrypted server logs the moment my security team breached his personal quarters."

He looked down at me, his gaze softening into something so tender, so impossibly deep, that the last lingering shadows of doubt within me vanished forever.

"It's over, Daphne," he murmured, his forehead resting gently against mine. "The wolves are dead. Every single person who had a hand in hurting your father or threatening you will spend the rest of their lives in a concrete cell."

I looked at the ring on my finger, then back into the eyes of the man who had loved me through grief, through silence, and through fire.

May you like

"Then take me away from here, Richard," I whispered. "Take me somewhere where there are no ghosts."
