Chapter 2 - The Roots of Deception

The grand foyer of the Sterling estate remained trapped in that suffocating silence for several agonizing seconds.
Victoria Vance stood paralyzed, her manicured fingers digging so hard into her own palms that her acrylic nails nearly pierced her skin. She had spent five years climbing the social ladder, elbowing her way into the Sterling family through pedigree, charm, and ruthless ambition. She had secured the ring, the wedding date, and the promise of a multi-billion-dollar dynasty.
And now, all of it was evaporating because of a penniless kitchen maid.
“Julian, put that trash down,” Victoria finally managed to force out, her voice pitching up in a shrill, hysterical octave that shattered the aristocratic calm she usually wore like armor. “You are carrying a servant who slipped while cleaning! If you touch her, if you let her stay in this house another second, our wedding is off!”
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He held Elena against his chest with a protective, unbreakable grip, his slate-gray eyes fixing on Victoria with a look of such profound disgust that it made the socialite physically recoil.
“Our wedding was off the moment you lied to my face, Victoria,” Julian said, his voice smooth, cold, and utterly devoid of mercy.
He turned his head slightly, raising his voice just enough to carry down the long hallway toward the domestic quarters.
“Mrs. Gable! Marcus!”
Within three seconds, the heavy mahogany service doors swung open. Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper with thirty years of service to the family, rushed into the foyer, flanked by Marcus, the estate’s chief of security. Their eyes widened in horror as they took in Elena cradled in Julian’s arms and the ruined food scattered across the marble.
“Sir? Good Lord, what happened?!” Mrs. Gable gasped, rushing forward with a spare woolen shawl from the hall tree.
“Take Mrs. Sterling,” Julian commanded, nodding toward Elena. “Carry her up to the West Wing Master Suite. Have Dr. Hayes summoned immediately. If anything is wrong with her or the child, every single person on this property will answer to me.”
“Right away, sir!” Mrs. Gable nodded, gently taking Elena from Julian’s arms, supporting the sobbing young woman as they moved quickly toward the private elevator.
Marcus stepped forward, standing at attention, his face carved from stone. He had worked for Julian long enough to recognize the look of a predator who had just uncovered a nest of vipers.
“Boss?” Marcus asked quietly.
Julian gently set Elena down into Mrs. Gable’s care, watched them step into the elevator, and then turned back toward Victoria. The terrifying aura of authority surrounding him made Marcus take a half-step back in involuntary respect.
“Marcus,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a chilling register. “Lock down the perimeter. No one enters, no one leaves. Confiscate Miss Vance’s phone, her vehicle keys, and her luggage from the guest suite. She is not to communicate with her family or her attorneys until I give the word.”
“Understood, Boss,” Marcus replied crisply.
Victoria shrieked, lunging forward as Marcus stepped into her path, blocking her exit. “You can’t do this to me! Do you know who my father is?! He’ll ruin you! The Vance family will sue you into the stone age!”
“Your father is a minor municipal judge whose pension I fund through three different charitable trusts,” Julian said, walking slowly toward her until she was forced to lean back against the mahogany console table. “If he opens his mouth, I will strip him of his robes by sunrise.”

Julian leaned in close, his voice a lethal whisper.
“You thought you could make her disappear, Victoria. But you didn't just throw away a maid. You tried to murder my blood.”
