Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten: The First Chapter of Forever

One year later.
The bell above the door of Maple Street Books chimed merrily, announcing the arrival of a brisk autumn breeze that carried the scent of roasted chestnuts and falling leaves from the street outside.
Emily stood behind the counter, wearing a comfortable cream-colored sweater, her hair tied back in a loose knot with a silver hairpin.
The bookstore was thriving. In fact, thanks to an anonymous endowment—managed by a very persistent tech firm’s philanthropic wing—the shop had expanded to include a rare-book restoration studio in the back, a cozy reading nook with plush velvet armchairs, and a permanent sign near the window reading: *Maple Street Books: Where Every Story Finds Its Ending.*
From the back room came the heavy, rhythmic thud of Hemingway, the orange cat, chasing a crumpled piece of receipt paper across the hardwood floor.
The door chime chimed again.
Emily looked up, expecting Mrs. Higgins returning from her afternoon walk.
Instead, a tall man in a charcoal wool coat stepped into the shop. He didn't wear a tie, his dark hair was slightly tousled by the autumn wind, and he carried a small, elegantly wrapped package tied with a red silk ribbon.
Daniel Brooks walked down the center aisle, his gray eyes warm and entirely at peace. He stopped at the counter, leaning his elbows against the wood just as he had done a year ago.
“Excuse me, mainder,” Daniel said, a teasing smile touching his lips. “I’m looking for a specific title.”
Emily raised an eyebrow, resting her chin on her hands. “Oh? And what title would that be, Mr. Brooks? We have thousands of them.”
Daniel reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small black velvet box, and slid it across the counter.
“I’m looking for the one where the bookstore clerk realizes she’s stuck with me for the rest of her life,” he said softly.
Emily’s breath caught. Her heart soared.
She opened the box. Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed platinum ring featuring a brilliant-cut diamond flanked by two tiny, perfectly carved silver book spines.

Before she could speak, Daniel walked around the counter, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her deeply, right in the middle of the mystery section, while Hemingway meowed loudly in protest from the back room.
The joke was over. The story had only just begun.
