Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

The sleek glass-and-steel monolith of Brooks Applied Technologies towered over the downtown skyline, gleaming like a giant crystal dagger against the bruised twilight sky of the city.

Inside the top-floor executive suite, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a diamond-tipped laser.

Twelve members of the board of directors sat around a massive, custom-built teakwood conference table. Piles of financial reports, printouts of Twitter analytics, and glossy magazine spreads lay scattered across the polished surface. At the head of the table sat Daniel Brooks, his face carved from impenetrable marble, listening in silence as the Chief Marketing Officer—a sharp, ambitious woman named Victoria Vance—paced back and forth.

“Daniel, you don't understand the magnitude of what’s happening!” Victoria argued, waving a tablet displaying trending hashtags. “Your sudden appearance with an unknown bookstore clerk has triggered a thirty-point spike in our retail consumer interest, but it’s completely disrupted our institutional PR strategy! The board was scheduled to announce your engagement to Cynthia Sterling next month at the Winter Gala!”

A murmur of agreement rippled through several older board members. Cynthia Sterling—daughter of Sterling Logistics and heir to a shipping fortune—represented the kind of strategic corporate alliance that old money loved.

Daniel remained entirely motionless. He didn’t lean forward; he didn’t blink. He simply let Victoria finish her theatrical pacing before he spoke.

“Let’s clarify a few things, Victoria,” Daniel began, his voice dropping into that quiet, deadly resonance that always signaled someone was about to lose their job. “First, I was never engaged to Cynthia Sterling. Cynthia and I attended three charity dinners at her mother’s insistence. There was never an agreement, a ring, or an understanding.”

“It was implied, Daniel!” an elderly board member protested, pounding his fist lightly on the teak table. “Sterling Logistics controls eighty percent of our shipping supply chain! An alliance with Cynthia solidifies our Q4 logistics bottleneck!”

“I built this company on quantum-resistant algorithms and superior technology, not strategic marriages like some medieval monarch,” Daniel snapped, his gray eyes flashing with cold fire. “If our supply chain depends on whether I date a shipping heiress, then our engineering team hasn't done their job. And as for my personal life—it is not, nor has it ever been, a corporate asset for the board to trade on the open market.”

Victoria crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes. “And the girl? Emily Carter? What is she? A charitable project? A temporary distraction? Because the media is already tearing her apart, Daniel. By tomorrow, paparazzi will be camping outside her apartment, her bookstore, and her life. Is exposing an innocent working-class woman to that level of toxicity really worth your little rebellion?”

That hit home.

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating.

Daniel leaned back slowly, his jaw clenching. Victoria’s words echoed his own darkest fears. He had thrown Emily into the deep end of his chaotic, hyper-visible world simply because he was captivated by her sharp tongue, her quiet dignity, and the refreshing way she treated him like a human being rather than a walking stock ticker.

Was he exposing her to a storm she couldn’t survive?

“My personal life is my own concern,” Daniel said coldly, standing up from his chair. The meeting was adjourned by sheer force of his presence. “If any member of this board attempts to interfere with Emily Carter, or leaks anything to the press, they will find themselves facing a breach-of-contract lawsuit so comprehensive it will strip them of their pensions. Meeting dismissed.”

Without waiting for a response, Daniel turned and strode out of the glass-walled boardroom toward his private elevator, his phone vibrating in his pocket.

He pulled it out. A text message from an unknown number.

*“If you really care about Emily, leave her alone before my clients finish destroying her bookstore.”*

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. He tapped the number, dialing instantly, but it went straight to a dead-end automated carrier.

*A threat.*

Someone was coming for Emily to get to him.

Without a second thought, Daniel changed directions, bypassing his private garage, and ordered his driver to take him straight to Maple Street Books.
