Chapter 4 - The Chip on the Marble

Every breath in the room stopped.
Mrs. Gable gasped softly from the corner of the staff line, while two of Rocco’s armed personal bodyguards—men who had stood watch over the Falcone family since his father’s reign—stepped forward from the shadows, their hands resting flat against their jacket lapels.
Bianca laughed—a high, brittle sound that rang hollow against the high ceiling. "Rocco, she's completely unhinged. She’s probably trying to claim the bounty with some stray collar she found in the street. Security, remove her immediately."
"Stand down," Rocco commanded without turning his head.
The bodyguards froze.
Rocco took three slow, measured steps toward Marin. The room seemed to contract around him, the temperature dropping beneath the weight of his unyielding presence. He stopped two feet from where she stood.
"What do you have, Marin?" Rocco asked softly.
Marin reached into the pocket of her apron.
She did not pull out a collar. She pulled out her cracked, outdated smartphone, connected via a short black USB adapter to the micro-SD card she had extracted from Titus’s collar two hours earlier.
"Titus is alive, Mr. Falcone," Marin said, looking directly into the mob boss’s slate-gray eyes. "He is currently recovering in my apartment on 49th Street. He was drugged with veterinary ketamine, bound with industrial zip-ties, and dumped beside the trash compactor behind the Vance Cold-Storage facility on 47th."
Bianca’s face drained of every drop of color. She staggered back half a pace, her hand catching the edge of the velvet settee. "That... that is an outrageous, slanderous fabrication! She stole your dog, Rocco! She kidnapped him for the ransom money!"
"I don't want your money, Miss Vance," Marin said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, unshakeable calm.
She tapped the screen of her phone, casting the decrypted video feed directly to the eighty-inch commercial display mounted above the grand fireplace.
The massive screen illuminated in high definition.
The video had been recorded forty-eight hours earlier from the high-resolution collar camera Rocco had installed on Titus after an assassination attempt in January.
The recording was indisputable:
On the screen, Bianca Vance stood inside the private study with Marcus Cole—the head of the rival South Side logistics syndicate.
“The merger with Rocco is finalized on Friday,” Bianca was heard saying on the crystalline audio track. “Once the vows are signed, my family assumes fifty percent voting control of the Calumet deep-water berths. The brake line on his Maybach is scheduled for Saturday morning. The only thing that could alert his security detail is that damned mastiff—he doesn't leave the study door.”
“I’ll have my men take the dog during the storm,” Marcus Cole replied, handing her a vial of clear liquid. “A double dose of ketamine. We’ll dump him in the canal.”
The video ended.
A suffocating, dead silence slammed into the grand salon.
Bianca stood paralyzed, her mouth open in a soundless scream, her hands trembling so violently that her diamond bracelet clattered loudly against the crystal table.
Rocco Falcone did not shout. He did not move a muscle.

He slowly turned his head toward the woman who wore his ring.
"You brought poison into my house, Bianca," Rocco whispered, his voice carrying the finality of an open grave. "And you left my brother to die in the mud."
