Chapter 7 - The Brother's Sanctuary

By the following morning, the transformation of Marin and Jamie Hollis's lives was absolute.

A specialized private medical transport, escorted by four motorcycle outriders from the Illinois State Police and two armored Falcone security vehicles, arrived at the Oak Creek Care Facility in the western suburbs.

Sixteen-year-old Jamie Hollis—pale, thin, his legs paralyzed since the crash that took his parents—was transferred into the state-of-the-art neuro-rehabilitation pavilion at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, an entire floor reserved exclusively under the Falcone Sovereign Medical Endowment.

Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief of pediatric and adolescent neurological surgery, met Marin and Rocco in the private consultation suite.

"The compression along Jamie's T-11 vertebra was never permanent, Marin," Dr. Lin reported, holding up the glowing digital MRI scan. "The state facility was managing him with low-cost maintenance therapy, but with specialized robotic gait training, micro-decompression surgery, and six months of intensive physical therapy, he has an eighty-five percent chance of walking unassisted."

Marin collapsed into a leather armchair, burying her face in her hands, weeping with the raw, miraculous relief of a sister who had fought through five years of darkness to save her brother.

A large, warm hand settled gently over her shoulder.

Rocco stood beside her chair, his presence an immovable mountain of iron and protection.

"His surgery is scheduled for Tuesday morning, Marin," Rocco said softly. "The best surgeons in the country are flying in from Johns Hopkins. You will never have to worry about an overdue bill, a missed medication, or a threatening landlord again."

"Rocco... why are you doing all of this?" Marin whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. "I only did what any decent human being would do."

Rocco looked down at her, his expression softening into an intensity that made her pulse race.

"In my world, Marin, decency is a myth people tell children to keep them quiet," Rocco replied. "Everyone I have ever known wanted something from me—my money, my territory, my power. You risked your life, your job, and your freedom to save an animal who had nothing to give you in return. You are the only real thing in my life."

The door to the private room clicked open.

Jamie sat in his new motorized titanium wheelchair, looking around the luxury suite with wide, disbelieving eyes, while Titus—wearing a clean leather collar adorned with a solid gold buckle—trotted proudly at his side, resting his heavy chin gently on the boy's lap.

Jamie looked at his sister, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across his face.

"Marin!" Jamie laughed. "This dog thinks he's my bodyguard!"

"He is your bodyguard, Jamie," Rocco smiled, stepping forward to shake the boy's hand firmly. "The best in Chicago."
