Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light

Two years after a maid caught Eleanor Moretti’s wrist in a crowded entrance hall, the Moretti coastal estate in Westchester was alive with the vibrant, joyful heartbeat of a real family home.

It was an exquisite Sunday afternoon in late August.

The golden sunset painted the waters of the Hudson River and the rolling emerald lawns in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and molten gold.

A long cedar dining table was set upon the wide stone terrace overlooking the gardens, decorated with fresh hydrangeas, platters of handmade pasta, fresh local seafood, sweet roasted corn, and a massive homemade three-tier strawberry shortcake prepared by the estate chef.

Salvatore Vane, Frank Callahan, Dr. Sarah Lin, Special Agent Raymond Callahan and his family, our dedicated foundation staff, and our closest friends sat around the table, their cheerful conversation and acoustic Italian guitar music drifting through the open French doors of the drawing room.

Down on the emerald grass near the garden pond, eighteen-month-old Clara—named in sacred, eternal honor of the brilliant sister who had started the journey—was running with energetic, fearless toddler speed, holding a small wooden duck that Dominic had hand-carved for her.

Bounding beside the child, her golden coat glistening in the warm evening light, was Barnaby, a massive, gentle golden retriever puppy Dominic had adopted for Clara’s first birthday, matching his strides to the child’s small steps, his tail wagging with joyful, protective rhythm.

Clara laughed—a clear, powerful, musical sound that carried across the water, completely free of fear, completely free of shadows.

Dominic and Avery stood by the limestone balustrade, watching their daughter in the golden light.

Dominic wore an ordinary linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his heavy platinum wedding ring catching the evening sun, his strong arms wrapped securely around Avery’s waist from behind, holding her close against his broad chest.

Avery rested her hands over his, leaning back against his broad frame, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against hers.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" Dominic murmured softly into her hair.

Avery looked out across the vast, sparkling expanse of the river where the white sailboats glided peacefully toward the open horizon under a cloudless sapphire sky.

"I was thinking about the broken porcelain two years ago, Dominic," she answered softly, a warm, peaceful smile touching her lips. "How I stood in that hallway with a target on my back... and how catching a falling wrist gave us our entire world."

Dominic turned her gently in his arms, his gray eyes shining with boundless, eternal devotion, and cupped her face in his warm, strong hands.

"You didn't just catch a wrist, Avery," Dominic smiled, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a slow, sacred kiss. "You brought this entire empire home into the light."

Little Clara came sprinting up the terrace steps with Barnaby trotting faithfully at her heels, out of breath and beaming with joy, holding a small bouquet of wild daisies she had picked from the lawn, throwing her small arms around both of their knees in a fierce, loving hug.

"Daddy! Mommy! Look!" Clara giggled, holding the flowers up to Avery. "Barnaby says he wants to eat shortcake at the big table tonight!"

Dominic and Avery knelt down together on the warm stone terrace, scooping their daughter into their arms, lifting her against their chests as Barnaby rested his golden head proudly against their knees with a deep, contented sigh.

"The whole cake belongs to you, our brave little doctor," Dominic smiled, kissing Clara’s glowing cheek, then kissing his wife's lips. "Every single piece."

The evening sun dipped below the western bluffs, bathing the estate in an eternal, sovereign warmth.

The poison cups were broken forever, the false matriarchs and corrupt predators had dissolved into dust, the old debts had been repaid in honor, and the sanctuary they had built with their own hands stood strong, open, sovereign, and filled with a lifetime of love, truth, and unbroken peace.
