Chapter 8 - The Federal Indictment of Eleanor Moretti

Six months later, the United States District Court in Boston convened for the formal criminal trial of The United States versus Eleanor Moretti.
The proceedings drew intense international media coverage, dominating the front pages of every major publication, exposing the chilling reality of syndicate poisonings, corporate embezzlements, and the dark domestic terror that had operated behind high-society country manors.
Dominic and Avery sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly.
Eleanor Moretti sat at the defense table in a generic, off-the-rack federal inmate jumpsuit.
The transformation was absolute.
Without her immaculate black mourning dresses, silver hairpins, and armed guards, Eleanor looked like a hollow, broken phantom, her silver hair unkempt, her hands and ankles bound in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.
Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the decrypted Swiss wire transfers, the toxicological reports matching the parathion residue from both Vittorio and Dominic Moretti, and the unedited audio surveillance from the estate conservatory.
When Avery Quinn presented the final physical exhibit—the glass specimen vial containing the exact chemical signature of the poison extracted from the silver midnight cup—the entire courtroom fell into an absolute, sacred hush.
“A ruthless matriarch deployed slow, calculated poison to murder her husband and consume an empire of blood,” Marcus Reed told the jury, his voice ringing with profound moral clarity. “And a brilliant forensic toxicologist, working undercover as a maid, exposed a twelve-year syndicate conspiracy with a microscope and an unyielding sense of justice.”
The federal jury deliberated for exactly twenty-two minutes.
The foreperson stood in a packed, breathless courtroom and delivered the verdict across all thirty-six felony counts:
“On all counts of First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Assassination, Corporate Embezzlement, and Federal Racketeering—Guilty on all counts.”
Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:
“Eleanor Moretti, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty against your own family to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed,” Judge Montgomery declared. “You are hereby sentenced to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado.”
The wooden gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Eleanor collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as armed federal marshals moved in to drag the disgraced predator down the subterranean holding corridor forever.
Dominic and Avery stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Frank Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
