Chapter 2 - The Sudden Interruption

Before the rim of the mug could force my teeth apart, a violent, chaotic crash echoed from the downstairs foyer.
The heavy front door banged against the interior wall with a concussive shockwave that rattled the antique chandelier hanging above the stairs. Footsteps—stumbling, heavy, and furious—pounded against the marble floor, followed by a shrill, intoxicated shriek that pierced the quiet of the estate.
"Arthur! You old miser, open this damn door!"
It was Victoria, Arthur’s thirty-year-old daughter and my notoriously abusive sister-in-law. Victoria lived for midnight benders, expensive liquor, and terrorizing anyone unfortunate enough to be in her orbit. Tonight, she was raging because her credit cards had been frozen by her father’s financial manager, and she had come to demand a bailout.
Arthur froze. The terrifying, predatory mask slipped from his face, replaced by a flash of frantic, self-preserving panic. If Victoria caught him cornered in my bedroom at midnight trying to force-feed me a poisoned drink, his pristine social standing—and his absolute control over the Sterling estate—would instantly shatter.
"Damn that wretched girl," Arthur hissed under his breath, his hand shaking slightly as he pulled the mug away from my face. He set the cup back down on the nightstand with an angry thud. "Stay in this room, Clara. Do not move an inch, or you will regret it for the rest of your life."
Without waiting for an acknowledgment, Arthur spun on his heel, pulling his velvet robe tight, and hurried down the hallway toward the stairs to intercept Victoria before she tore the front door off its hinges.
I sat frozen in the center of the mattress, staring at the porcelain mug gleaming ominously under the lamplight. The white ring of powder drifted slightly as the liquid settled.
Downstairs, Victoria’s screeching voice echoed up the stairwell.
"Where's the scotch, old man?! Don't tell me you locked the liquor cabinet again! I need a drink right now, or I'm calling the tabloids and telling them how you really run this family!"
"Shut your mouth, you reckless fool," Arthur’s harsh whisper carried up the steps. "Come into the kitchen. I'll pour you whatever you want, just keep your voice down."
An electric surge of survival instinct detonated in my mind.
I didn't hesitate. I threw off the duvet, sprang from the bed, and grabbed the heavy porcelain mug from the nightstand, its sides ice-cold against my palm. I crept out into the dark hallway, moving with the silent, ghost-like footfall of a hunted animal, pausing at the head of the stairs to listen.
Arthur and Victoria were arguing in the kitchen alcove near the pantry.
"Give me that bottle!" Victoria slurred loudly, snatching a heavy crystal decanter from the counter.
I slipped down the stairs, keeping to the deep shadows of the mahogany wainscoting. Peering around the corner into the brightly lit kitchen, I saw Victoria leaning against the marble island, rummaging through the refrigerator while Arthur’s back was turned as he searched the high cabinets for a bottle of vintage bourbon.
It took half a second. I stepped into the kitchen entrance, set the poisoned mug of chamomile tea right in the center of the kitchen island within her immediate field of vision, and retreated backward into the shadows of the hallway pantry.
"Here," I called out, altering my voice just enough to sound casual. "You left your tea on the counter, Victoria."
Victoria blinked her bloodshot eyes, focused unsteadily on the mug sitting right before her, and let out a harsh, triumphant laugh.

"Well, finally, someone with some manners around here!" Victoria sneered.
Before Arthur could turn around, Victoria grabbed the mug, tilted her head back, and swallowed the entire contents of the spiked chamomile tea in three massive, greedy gulps.
