Chapter 3 - The Unconscious Victim

The sound of Victoria swallowing the poisoned tea echoed in the quiet kitchen like the dropping of a guillotine blade.
I stood frozen inside the narrow darkness of the hallway pantry, my hand pressed over my mouth to muffle my breathing. My heart hammered against my ribs with terrifying force, the adrenaline roaring in my ears like a rushing waterfall. I had just weaponized Arthur’s malice, redirecting a trap meant to violate and destroy me directly onto his own daughter.
"Hey! What did you just drink?!" Arthur’s voice roared from across the kitchen island, pitching upward in sudden, unmitigated panic.
I heard the heavy thud of a crystal decanter hitting the marble countertop as Arthur spun around.
"Ugh, gross! What is that, chalk?" Victoria coughed, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, her face contorting into an expression of intense disgust. "It tastes like bitter chemicals... God, my throat feels weird..."
"You stupid, worthless cow!" Arthur bellowed, his voice cracking with a raw, ugly rage I had never heard from the polite patriarch before. He lunged across the kitchen island, grabbing Victoria by the shoulders and shaking her violently. "Spit it out right now! Where is it?! How much did you swallow?!"
"Get your hands off me, you old creep!" Victoria screamed, shoving him away, swaying unsteadily on her high heels. Her eyes rolled upward, her pupils dilating into black pools as the heavy pharmaceutical sedative hit her bloodstream with sledgehammer force.
Within ninety seconds of swallowing the mug, Victoria’s knees buckled completely.
She let out a soft, wet gasp, her body collapsing heavily against the kitchen cabinets before sliding down onto the cold tile floor like a broken marionette. Her breathing slowed to a shallow, rhythmic rasp, her eyes fluttering shut as she slipped into a deep, chemical-induced coma.
"Victoria! Victoria, damn you!" Arthur hissed, slapping her cheek lightly to rouse her.
When she didn't so much as twitch, Arthur stood up, his massive frame trembling with a mixture of furious rage and cold, calculating terror. He glanced around the kitchen, his eyes darting toward the staircase.
"Clara!" Arthur bellowed into the empty hallway, his voice dripping with venom. "I know you're watching, you miserable little spy! Come down here right now!"
Panic clawed at my chest. I didn't answer. I backed out of the pantry, slipping silently across the hallway hardwood, and darted upstairs before he could turn his attention toward the upper level.
I didn't run to my bedroom. I knew he would search every inch of that room first.
Instead, I slipped inside the dark, cramped confines of the hallway linen closet directly across from my bedroom door. The closet was packed floor-to-ceiling with heavy wool blankets, spare pillows, and towering stacks of Egyptian cotton sheets, smelling faintly of lavender sachet and cedar.
I squeezed myself into the very back corner behind a row of winter coats, pulling a heavy tweed overcoat over my shoulders to conceal my form.
Through the louvered wooden slats of the closet door, I had a crystal-clear, panoramic view of the entire upper hallway.
A moment later, heavy, furious footsteps pounded up the grand staircase. Arthur appeared at the top landing, breathing heavily, his face flushed dark red with murderous intent. He marched straight down the hall, bypassed his own guest suite, and threw open my bedroom door.
"Clara! Where are you hiding?!" Arthur snarled, his voice echoing from inside the empty master bedroom.
When he found the bed empty, a low, savage growl tore from his throat. He stormed back out into the hallway, standing less than ten feet from the linen closet where I crouched in the dark.
His eyes scanned the hallway shadows. Slowly, deliberately, Arthur reached into the pocket of his velvet bathrobe, pulled out a heavy brass skeleton key, and inserted it into the exterior lock of my bedroom door.
CLACK.

He turned the key, locking my bedroom door securely from the outside, trapping any potential occupant inside a cage with no exit.
Then, he turned around, smiled a sickening, victorious smile into the dark hallway, and whispered to himself: "Let's see how you escape now, my clever little bird."
