Chapter 5 - The Severing of the Alliance

Donna Carmela did not blink. She held my gaze with the absolute, sociopathic conviction of a woman who believed that power justified any atrocity.

"A bastard born in a charity ward is not an heir, Dominic," my mother said, each syllable coated in poison. "Isabella Vitale will give you three legitimate sons with the blood of two ancient families. You will take this girl, you will pay her another hundred thousand dollars, and you will send her and the child to California on the morning flight. If you break this engagement tonight, Don Vitale will withdraw thirty million dollars in port credit, and the five families will declare House Moretti rogue."

A slow, terrifying smile touched my mouth—the smile that had preceded the execution of the Colombo traitors in 2022.

"Don Vitale can withdraw whatever he pleases, Mother," I replied softly. "Because by dawn, Don Vitale will be answering federal subpoenas."

The heavy iron door of the vault swung open.

Frank Callahan, my chief corporate litigator, walked into the room carrying a heavy leather briefcase stamped with the gold seal of the United States District Court.

Behind him walked Special Agent Raymond Callahan of the FBI’s Organized Crime Strike Force, flanked by two armed federal marshals.

Donna Carmela’s composure fractured. Her hands dropped to her sides, her diamond clutch falling to the stone floor with a sharp, echoing clatter.

"What is this...?" my mother stammered, looking at the federal badges. "Dominic... you brought federal agents into the ancestral vault?"

"I didn't bring them into the vault, Mother," I said calmly. "They have been monitoring the Vitale shipping terminals for eighteen months with my full, encrypted cooperation."

Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming three thick volumes of blue-backed federal indictments onto the cedar table.

"Under Title 18 of the United States Code," Frank announced, his voice cutting through the vault like a broadsword, "Don Antonio Vitale and his executive board were formally arrested at the front gates twenty minutes ago for Federal Narcotics Trafficking, Arms Smuggling through the Port of Newark, and Interstate Racketeering under the RICO Act."

Frank turned to Donna Carmela, his expression hard as flint.

"Furthermore, Donna Carmela," Frank continued, "our forensic accountants decrypted your private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands three hours ago. You utilized six million dollars in siphoned Moretti maritime reserves to finance Don Vitale’s private logistics terminals in exchange for forty percent of the joint corporate holding firm. You are under active federal investigation for Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, and Obstruction of Justice."

Donna Carmela swayed on her feet, her face turning an ashen shade of wet chalk. She reached out, grabbing Salvatore’s arm to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

"You... you betrayed your own blood, Dominic?" my mother wheezed, her voice cracked with bitter, ruined disbelief. "You dismantled your own father's empire for a maid?"

"I didn't dismantle an empire, Mother," I replied, stepping beside Sophia and taking her cold hand in mine. "I cleansed it. And from this night forward, your name is erased from House Moretti."

I turned to the federal marshals.

"Escort Donna Carmela and Salvatore to the guest pavilion under twenty-four-hour federal custody," I commanded softly. "She is not to touch a telephone until the United States Attorney arrives at dawn."

As the federal marshals escorted the weeping, ruined matriarch from the vault, I turned to Sophia.

"Come, Sophia," I whispered, kissing her trembling knuckles. "It’s time to go see our daughter."
