Chapter 6 - The Feast in the Master Suite

By 1:00 AM, the two hundred high-society guests had departed from the Long Island estate in stunned, disciplined silence.

The grand ballroom was dark, its six thousand white lights extinguished, but on the third floor of the manor, the master family suite blazed with the warm, golden light of a roaring fire in the fieldstone hearth.

The room smelled of seasoned cedarwood, sweet roasted apples, and rich, dark hot chocolate.

Sitting in the center of the massive velvet sofa, wearing clean navy silk pajamas that Mrs. Ferrara had procured from the guest trunks, was three-year-old Lily.

Beside her sat Enzo Rossi, holding a wooden chessboard, patiently showing the little girl how the carved silver knights moved across the squares. The silver-framed photograph of Sophia sat upright on the low coffee table, surrounded by a plate of warm butter shortbread and fresh strawberries.

The heavy walnut doors clicked open.

Sophia and I walked into the room.

Lily looked up from the chessboard.

The moment the little girl saw her mother standing in the doorway—no longer in her faded gray smock, but dressed in an elegant cream cashmere sweater and wool trousers, her chestnut hair brushed soft around her shoulders—Lily let out a high, musical squeal of pure, unshadowed childhood joy.

"Mommy!" Lily shouted, scrambling off the velvet cushions, her small bare feet flying across the Persian rug.

Sophia dropped to both knees on the floorboards, opening her arms wide.

Lily slammed into her mother’s chest, wrapping her small arms around Sophia’s neck with ferocious, desperate love, burying her face into her mother’s shoulder.

"Mommy... Mommy... you finished the napkins!" Lily giggled through happy tears. "The big man with the shiny ring said you were coming!"

Sophia wrapped her arms around her daughter, lifting Lily against her chest, weeping with the raw, miraculous relief of a mother who had walked through four years of hell to hold her baby in the light.

"I’m here, my sweet flower," Sophia sobbed softly, kissing Lily’s cheeks, her forehead, her hair. "Mommy is here. We never have to iron another napkin again."

I walked over, lowering myself onto one knee beside them, my massive, scarred hand gently resting over Lily’s small back.

Lily looked up from her mother’s shoulder, her amber eyes meeting mine.

She reached out with one small, warm hand, touching the lapel of my dress shirt, her fingertips brushing the gold Moretti medallion that I had reclaimed from the vault and fastened around my neck once more.

"Are you the prince from the picture?" Lily whispered in awe.

Tears burned behind my eyelids—tears of a man who had finally found the sacred, unyielding purpose of his existence.

"I am your father, Lily," I said, my voice trembling with an iron vow. "And I am never going to let you go."

Lily smiled—a radiant, unclouded beam of pure light—and threw her other arm around my neck, pulling both of her parents into an unbreakable, sovereign circle of love.
