Chapter 1 - The Strike and the Escape

The impact of my boot caught Ethan square in the chest with a force he completely failed to anticipate. He let out a sharp gasp, the air exploding from his lungs as he staggered backward, colliding hard against the side table before sprawling onto the hardwood floor.

Patricia shrieked, her hands flying to her face in utter disbelief. “How dare you! Ethan, get up! Get the card from her!”

Ethan groaned, clutching his chest and trying to push himself up, but the wind was still knocked entirely out of him.

I didn't waste a single second. I lunged for the front door, my fingers wrapping around the deadbolt and twisting it open with a satisfying click. I yanked the door wide and bolted out into the afternoon sunlight, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs.

“Maya! Come back here! You can’t leave!” Patricia screamed from the threshold, her voice echoing down the suburban driveway.

I didn't look back. I reached my SUV, hit the unlock button, and scrambled into the driver's seat. My hands shook as I shoved the key into the ignition, the engine roaring to life. In the rearview mirror, I saw Ethan stumbling out onto the front porch, pointing frantically at my car, while Patricia yelled empty threats about calling the police.

I threw the vehicle into reverse, tires spitting gravel, and sped down the street.

Once I was three blocks away, I pulled over to the side of the road, my chest heaving and tears finally blurring my vision. Not tears of sadness—tears of sheer, unadulterated fury. For months, I had blinded myself to the truth. I had poured my heart, my time, and my financial resources into a man who viewed me merely as a walking ATM and a convenient incubator.

I looked down at my stomach, placing a trembling hand over my clothes.

“I’m sorry, baby,” I whispered to the tiny life growing inside me. “Mommy was blind. But I promise you, we are never going back there.”

My phone buzzed in the passenger seat. It was Ethan. Then another text from Patricia. Then another call.

I didn't answer. Instead, I opened my banking app. With a few swift taps, I locked my primary business and personal debit cards, ensuring they couldn't access a single cent. Then, I dialed a number I knew by heart.

“Hey, Maya! Everything set for the food tasting tomorrow?” my lawyer and close friend, David, answered cheerfully.

“David,” I said, my voice cutting through his greeting with icy precision. “I need you to meet me at my office in thirty minutes. And call our corporate security team. We have an emergency.”

Fifteen minutes later, I walked through the glass doors of my Dallas marketing firm. My team looked up, startled by my pale face and the fierce determination in my eyes.

“Cancel all my meetings for the rest of the week,” I told my office manager, Sarah, as I walked briskly toward my private office. “And if a man named Ethan Vance or a woman named Patricia Vance shows up here, call security immediately. They are banned from the premises.”

David arrived twenty minutes later, out of breath and looking deeply concerned. I sat behind my desk, the panic completely gone, replaced by the sharp, calculating mindset that had built my company from the ground up.

“Maya, what happened?” David asked, sitting down opposite me. “You look like you’ve been through a war.”

“I have,” I replied evenly. “And now, I’m declaring total war back.”

Over the next hour, I laid out everything. I told him about the financial demands, the blocked door, Patricia shoving me against the wall, and Ethan standing guard while they tried to rob me. David’s face darkened with every detail, his lawyer’s instincts kicking into overdrive.

“That’s extortion, assault, and false imprisonment,” David said, his voice dropping dangerously low. “We can press criminal charges immediately. And as for the wedding? It’s over. But we need to make sure they can’t touch a dime of your assets, especially since you two share no legal ties yet.”

“They won't get a single penny,” I said, leaning forward. “In fact, they’re about to find out just how expensive attacking me really is.”
