Chapter 3 - The Public Exposure

Three days passed in absolute silence from Ethan and Patricia. I assumed they were licking their wounds, trying to figure out how their master plan had imploded so spectacularly.

I used the time productively. I finalized the paperwork for a major corporate rebranding project at my firm, secured an elite roster of new clients, and scheduled an appointment with my OB/GYN, who happily confirmed that despite the stress and the shove, my baby was healthy, growing, and completely safe.

On the fourth day, the storm broke.

It began with a frantic knock on my front door around noon. When I peered through the peephole, I didn't see Ethan or Patricia. Instead, I saw a nervous-looking delivery man holding a thick manila envelope stamped with legal seals.

I opened the door and signed for it.

Inside was a stack of legal notices, but not the kind I expected. It was a preliminary lawsuit filed by Ethan’s business creditors, demanding immediate repayment of corporate debts—debts that had my forged signature attached to them as the primary guarantor.

They hadn't stopped. Even after I cut them off, Ethan and Patricia had tried to double down, attempting to force my company to absorb their failing startup's massive liabilities before the wedding could be exposed. They were operating under the delusion that if they panicked me enough, I would cave and bail them out.

Instead, they walked right into the trap David and I had set.

“David, look at this,” I said into my phone as I forwarded pictures of the legal documents to my lawyer. “They tried to execute the guarantor clause on the commercial loan this morning.”

“Perfect,” David chuckled darkly on the other end. “The police have already wrapped up their investigation into the forgery. They have an arrest warrant out for Ethan as of ten minutes ago. And guess what else?”

“What?”

“Patricia’s social media empire—she runs that little lifestyle blog where she pretends to be a wealthy philanthropist—is about to take a massive hit. I leaked the details of her luxury spending using your stolen funds to a local Dallas investigative journalist. The story drops at 3:00 PM.”

I smiled, looking out the window at the sunny Dallas sky. “Karma is a wonderful thing.”

By 3:15 PM, my phone started buzzing again, but this time it wasn't Ethan. It was my mother, my friends, and several colleagues, all sending me screenshots of a viral news article circulating online.

"DALLAS LIFESTYLE INFLUENCER AND SON ACCUSED OF FRAUD, ASSAULT, AND FORGERY AGAINST PREGNANT TECH ENTREPRENEUR."

The article detailed everything. It didn't mention my name directly for privacy reasons, but it explicitly named Ethan Vance and Patricia Vance, detailing how they had systematically defrauded a successful local businesswoman, forged financial documents, and physically assaulted a pregnant woman when she refused to hand over her life savings to fund their extravagant wedding.

Public opinion turned on them like a tidal wave.

Comments on Patricia’s blog poured in by the thousands, calling her a fraud, a thief, and worse. Her sponsors dropped her within an hour. Her country club membership was suspended pending an investigation.

And as for Ethan? His startup’s remaining investors pulled out immediately, refusing to be associated with a criminal investigation for forgery and fraud.
