Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

The sun began its slow, majestic descent into the western horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in breathtaking ribbons of gold, violet, and deep crimson.
I sat on the wide, wooden back porch of my new home—a gorgeous, sunlit townhouse nestled in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood just north of the city. There were no ghosts lingering in the hallways. No terror of looming deportation letters. No fear of predatory scammers hiding behind corporate letterheads.
The air smelled of fresh spring rain, blooming lilacs, and the rich, comforting fragrance of black coffee in my favorite mug.
My phone buzzed on the patio table.
I picked it up. It was a calendar notification: Tomorrow, 10:00 AM - Guest Lecturer at Northwestern University Department of Computer Science: "Digital Ethics and Immigrant Advocacy in Tech."
I smiled, locking the screen and setting the phone down.
I walked to the edge of the porch, resting my hands against the polished wooden railing, looking out over the wide, open street where the evening lights were just beginning to flicker on one by one.
The trap had been set for me, but I had refused to walk into it. I had read every line, checked every document, and held my ground against the worst the corporate underworld had to throw at my dreams.
I took a deep, uninhibited breath of the evening air.

The past was buried. The future was secure.
And for the first time in my life, I knew with absolute, unshakeable certainty that I was finally, permanently home.
