Chapter 7 - The True Offer

Two weeks had passed since the morning at Sterling & Vance.

Marcus and Leo were sitting in Cook County holding cells awaiting a federal grand jury indictment, denied bail due to being flight risks with offshore passport connections. The fake agency had been raided by federal marshals, its assets frozen, and its victims contacted by the state attorney general’s office to begin restitution proceedings.

And me?

I was sitting on the tenth-floor corner office of Thorne & Associates, looking out over the magnificent skyline of downtown Chicago.

My office was spacious, filled with natural light, a sleek standing desk, and a dual-monitor setup running advanced machine-learning algorithms. No cracked coffee mugs. No terrifying vulnerability.

The glass door clicked open, and David Thorne—a silver-haired, distinguished immigration attorney with thirty years of courtroom experience—stepped inside carrying a sleek leather folder.

"Clara, do you have a minute?" David asked warmly.

"Always, David," I said, spinning my ergonomic chair around.

He walked over and laid a single, crisp document on my desk. It wasn't a visa application or a tax form. It was an official approval letter from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, bearing a golden embossed seal.

Permanent Resident Status: Approved.

I stared at the green card approval notice, my breath catching in my throat. The multi-year nightmare of uncertainty, fear, and provisional visas was officially, permanently over. I was a legal resident of the United States, with a secure career, a loyal network of federal protectors, and an unshakeable future.

"It came in the mail an hour ago," David smiled, leaning against the edge of my desk. "Congratulations, Clara. You earned every single letter of it."

"Thank you, David," I whispered, gently running my fingertips over the embossed seal. "I honestly still feel like I'm going to wake up and find myself back in that diner."

"You're not dreaming," David said, his expression turning serious. "In fact, your first official project with our tech compliance division starts Monday. We’re building an automated auditing software to scan fraudulent shell companies and predatory employment agencies operating across the Midwest. We want you to lead the engineering team."

I looked up at him, a thrill of absolute excitement sparking through my chest. Not only was I safe, but I was going to use my skills to hunt down every single monster like Marcus Vance who preyed on vulnerable immigrants.

"Consider it done," I said, my voice ringing with absolute confidence.
