Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Horizon

One year after the publication of my book, the summer sun rose over the Chicago skyline in a brilliant, breathtaking wash of liquid gold, burning the morning mist off Lake Michigan until the water sparkled like a field of crushed diamonds.
At 8:30 AM, the digital clock on my dual-monitor setup clicked to life in the sunlit office of my independent compliance consulting firm.
8:30:00 AM.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city of Chicago was humming with vibrant, unstoppable energy.
I stood by the glass, holding a ceramic mug of dark roast coffee, looking down at the bustling stream of people walking along the sidewalks below.
My phone buzzed softly on the desk.
It was a text message from Special Agent Robert Sterling:
STERLING (DOL-OIG): "Morning, Marcus. Just wrapped up an inspection sweep at three incoming logistics hubs in O'Hare. Zero infractions. Zero debt-peonage flags. The word is out across the entire transport sector: don't mess with anyone who reads the small print."
I smiled, locking my screen and placing the phone back down on the polished wood.
The past was a closed file, archived in an unalterable database that required no further review.
The double doors of my office clicked open.
My administrative assistant stepped inside, holding a fresh schedule and a stack of new client intake forms.
I turned away from the window, walked out of my office, and joined my team in the center of the bullpen.
