Chapter 6 - The Federal Ledger

Two weeks later, the front page of the Chicago Tribune carried a headline that sent shockwaves through the midwestern logistics sector: "FEDERAL TASK FORCE RAID PREDATORY LABOR RING; VANCE LOGISTICS INDICTED IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR DEBT-PEONAGE SCHEME."

The article detailed the simultaneous execution of search warrants at 414 North Wabash and the Apex Freight warehouse in Gary, Indiana. It described how investigators had uncovered an underground network of forged employment contracts, illegally seized passports, and predatory debt-servicing agreements designed to trap vulnerable out-of-state workers into perpetual servitude.

I sat in a quiet, sunlit corner booth of a bookstore café on Michigan Avenue, reading the report over a toasted bagel and a fresh cup of tea.

My phone vibrated gently against the wooden table.

It was a text message from Special Agent Robert Sterling:

STERLING (DOL-OIG): "Grand jury returned a twenty-count indictment against Julian Vance and Derek Vance this morning. Federal marshals picked Derek up at a coffee shop in River North an hour ago. He tried to run, but his Nikes weren't fast enough. Thanks for your statement, Marcus. You saved a lot of people from walking into that basement."

I smiled, locking my screen and sliding the phone back into my pocket.

The nightmare of the Gary warehouse was a closed file, archived in an unalterable federal database that required no further review. The ghosts of my first life had been permanently exorcised, replaced by the solid, unshakeable reality of an honest life built on vigilance, self-reliance, and the absolute refusal to sign away my future.

As I walked out of the bookstore café into the crisp November air, the city of Chicago no longer looked like an intimidating, predatory labyrinth.

It looked like a wide-open horizon.
