Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Vance Consortium

At noon that day, the forty-second floor of the Vance Financial Center in downtown Manhattan was placed under emergency federal quarantine.
The grand thirty-seat executive boardroom, encased in soaring architectural glass overlooking New York Harbor, was occupied by the twelve members of the board of directors and senior partners of the Vance logistics syndicate.
Marcus Vance—Julian’s older brother and the co-conspirator of the maritime fraud—sat at the head of the long obsidian table, frantically attempting to authorize the emergency transfer of forty million dollars to private accounts in Zurich.
The heavy double mahogany entrance doors of the boardroom were blown open by concussive hydraulic force.
Six armed federal marshals in tactical gear swept into the room with carbines raised, followed by Special Agent Raymond Callahan and Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed.
Gabriel Caruso strode into the boardroom wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal three-piece suit beneath a heavy black wool overcoat, his presence commanding immediate, breathless silence across the entire floor.
Beside him walked Frank Callahan, carrying four heavy steel cases containing the seized forensic servers from the Pocono property.
Marcus Vance froze, his pen slipping from his fingers, clattering loudly against the obsidian table. "Caruso...? What is the meaning of this federal circus? You have no standing in this building!"
Frank Callahan stepped forward, slamming the certified federal indictments onto the center of the table with a concussive thud.
"Under emergency arrest warrants issued by the United States District Court at 6:00 AM today, Marcus," Frank announced, his voice booming across the silent room, "Marcus Vance and the entire executive committee of the Vance Consortium are under federal arrest for First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Arson for Financial Gain, Grand Probate Larceny, and Interstate Racketeering."
Frank connected his tablet to the seventy-foot digital display wall.
The massive screens illuminated instantly, displaying the decrypted wiretap recordings between Julian and Marcus Vance, the financial routing numbers showing the sixty-million-dollar embezzlement, and the forensic reconstruction of the Pocono gas explosion.
The boardroom erupted into furious, panicked shouts. Directors shoved their chairs back in open horror, stepping away from Marcus Vance as if he were carrying a lethal contagion.
Marcus backed against the panoramic window, hyperventilating, his expensive veneer completely pulverized into dust. "This... this is an extortion scheme! You fabricated these files!"
Gabriel walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, stopping two feet from where Marcus stood trembling.

"You murdered my brother and left an innocent mother and child to starve in Poughkeepsie, Marcus," Gabriel whispered, his voice dropping into a register of icy, lethal stillness. "Your family's name is erased from this city forever."
Four federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel transport chains around Marcus Vance’s wrists and ankles, dragging the disgraced titan from his own boardroom as the entire assembly watched in stunned, condemning silence.
