Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Vance Brothers

In September, the United States District Court in Lower Manhattan convened for the formal criminal trial of The United States versus Julian Vance and Marcus Vance.

The proceedings drew intense international media coverage, dominating headlines across the globe, exposing the chilling reality of corporate assassination, probate forgery, and private mercenary violence that had operated behind high-society boardrooms.

Gabriel and I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery dressed in tailored dark wool coats, holding hands firmly. Lucy remained at the Hudson Valley estate, playing safely in the autumn gardens with Mrs. Gable and Barnaby.

Julian and Marcus Vance sat at the defense table in matching orange federal inmate jumpsuits.

The transformation was absolute.

Without their bespoke dinner jackets, private yachts, and manufactured arrogance, the Vance brothers looked like hollow, broken phantoms, their hands and ankles shackled in heavy steel chains that clattered loudly with every dragging step.

Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Reed presented one hundred and twelve exhibits of forensic digital evidence, the unedited dashcam footage from the Pocono property, the recovered propane valve components, and the devastating testimonies of eighteen former logistics contractors.

When I took the witness stand on the fourth day, my testimony lasted three hours.

I spoke with calm, precise, and unshakeable clarity, detailing the six years of hiding, the forged probate documents, and the silver medallion that had exposed the lie.

The jury deliberated for exactly twenty-eight minutes.

The foreperson stood in a packed, breathless courtroom and delivered the verdict across all forty-two felony counts:

"On all counts of First-Degree Premeditated Murder of Daniel Caruso, Arson for Financial Gain, Corporate Extortion, and Grand Larceny—Guilty on all counts."

Chief District Judge Evelyn Montgomery delivered the maximum statutory sentences from the bench with solemn, unyielding severity:

"Julian Vance, Marcus Vance, you committed acts of monstrous, calculated cruelty against an innocent family to satisfy an insatiable, criminal greed," Judge Montgomery declared, her voice echoing through the silent hall. "You are hereby sentenced to Life in Prison Without the Possibility of Parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute."

The gavel struck the sound block with concussive finality.

Julian and Marcus collapsed onto the defense table, weeping in bitter, total ruin as the armed federal marshals moved in to drag them down the subterranean holding corridor forever.

Gabriel and I stood up, walked down the center aisle of the courtroom hand-in-hand with Special Agent Callahan, and stepped through the double mahogany doors into the bright autumn sunlight, leaving the darkness behind us forever.
