Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The silence in the Ashcombe Grand ballroom was broken only by the ragged breathing of Arthur Thorne and the distant hum of the crystal chandeliers. Three hundred people watched as the bride — immaculate, furious, and utterly betrayed — unclipped her diamond tiara and laid it beside the spilled water on the altar.

"The wedding is off," Imogen said. Her voice was remarkably steady, echoing cleanly against the vaulted ceilings.

"Imogen, wait, don't do this, we can fix this, we can talk about this in private!" Beckett lunged toward her, his hands hovering desperately near her shoulders, afraid to touch her yet terrified to let go. "This isn't my fault! My father deceived me too! I loved you, Imogen! Everything between us was real!"

"Was it?" Imogen turned to face him, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving fire. "You built a life with me on top of a grave that wasn't even cold. You let me walk around your estate, sleep in your bed, and wear clothes that probably belonged to a woman you swore you mourned. How many other lies did your father feed you, Beckett? Or were you just too comfortable to ask questions?"

Beckett flinched as if he had been physically struck. He opened his mouth, but no defense came. He looked like a man who had suddenly woken up to find his entire universe constructed of balsa wood and gasoline.

Elena watched them, her expression a mix of vindication and profound sorrow. She stepped closer to the altar, resting her hand on the edge of the polished wooden platform. "He didn't ask questions, Imogen, because asking questions meant he might have to give up his inheritance. The Thornes don't share. They take, they hide, and they bury."

Arthur Thorne finally found his voice, though it sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "You think you've won, Elena? You think walking in here with a folder of forged papers destroys fifty years of standing? Even if the wedding is ruined, this family owns the judges, the police, and half the state senate. You'll be locked away before midnight."

"Try it, Arthur," a sharp, new voice rang out from the side entrance of the ballroom.

Everyone turned. Standing by the heavy velvet drapes were four men in charcoal federal suits, flanked by local uniformed officers. Leading them was a woman with sharp silver hair and an FBI windbreaker thrown over a tailored pantsuit.

"Special Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation," the woman announced, flashing a badge that gleamed under the chandeliers. She walked with brisk, unquestionable authority straight toward the front row. "Arthur Thorne, you are under arrest for federal mail fraud, witness tampering, corporate embezzlement, and the falsification of government death records."

The gasps in the room turned into outright shock. Flashbulbs from hidden paparazzi pods suddenly flared near the back doors, capturing every angle of the disgraced billionaire as federal agents moved in, reading him his rights and clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Arthur didn't fight. He let his head drop, his decades of untouchable power evaporating in the span of thirty seconds. As they led him past the altar, he didn't look at his son; he looked straight ahead, his face a monument of bitter defeat.

Beckett collapsed onto the altar steps, burying his face in his hands as his father was hauled away in front of society's elite.

Imogen didn't feel pity. She felt hollowed out, as though a bomb had gone off inside her chest, clearing away all the debris of a fake life. She looked down at Elena, who was wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

"Where is she?" Imogen asked quietly. "Your daughter."

Elena looked up, a fragile, hopeful smile breaking through her exhaustion. "She's outside. In a car with a social worker and a federal marshal. She's safe. But... she doesn't know who I am yet. I wanted to settle this first so she never has to look over her shoulder again."

Imogen nodded slowly. She reached down, unhooked the diamond tennis bracelet Beckett had given her for their engagement, and dropped it onto the altar beside her tiara.

"Go get your daughter, Elena," Imogen said.
