Chapter 6 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months passed before the media circus surrounding the Thorne family finally began to quiet down.

Arthur Thorne was denied bail, facing a projected fifteen-year sentence in a federal penitentiary as his network of shell companies and bribed officials collapsed under the weight of the SEC investigation. Beckett Thorne took a plea deal, testifying against his father in exchange for a reduced sentence of three years in a minimum-security facility. The Thorne dynasty, built on lies, stolen identities, and ruthless corporate greed, was officially liquidated by the federal government to pay back victims of embezzlement.

Imogen watched the trial coverage from her new apartment — a bright, airy loft in the industrial district that she had completely renovated herself.

She had gone back to work immediately after the wedding disaster, joining an elite boutique architectural firm downtown. Stripped of the suffocating expectations of high society, she threw herself into structural design, spending her days pouring over blueprints, sketching sustainable urban spaces, and working sixty-hour weeks not out of distraction, but out of genuine, burning passion.

On a crisp Tuesday morning in April, Imogen was standing on a scaffolding platform at a historic brownstone restoration site in downtown Boston, checking the masonry work, when her phone rang.

She pulled off her heavy work gloves, wiped a smudge of concrete dust from her forehead, and answered.

"Imogen Vale," she said, her voice professional and crisp.

"Hi, Imogen. It’s Elena."

Imogen’s face instantly softened into a wide smile. "Elena! Hey. How are things? Is Sarah ready for her spring soccer league?"

"She's wearing her cleats inside the house right now, which tells me yes," Elena laughed warmly. "Actually, the reason I'm calling isn't just to chat about soccer. We're settled now. The federal protective detail was lifted last week, and we bought a small house in Brookline. It has a real backyard, and an apple tree."

"That’s amazing, Elena. I'm so happy for you both," Imogen said, genuine warmth filling her chest.

"We're having a small barbecue this Saturday to celebrate," Elena continued hesitantly. "Just a few close friends, some neighbors, and... well, Sarah has been asking every single day if the 'angel in the white dress' can come over for burgers."

Imogen looked down at her paint-splattered jeans and steel-toed boots, then out across the historic Boston skyline taking shape around her. "I'd love to, Elena. I really would."

"Great. Don't dress up. Bring an appetite."
