Chapter 6 - The Restitution of the Estate

By Wednesday afternoon, the dark, oppressive tension that had surrounded our lives had completely dissolved beneath the brilliant winter sunshine of Long Island Sound.

The commercial walk-in freezer in the pantry—where Leo and Mia had nearly perished in the dark—had been permanently decommissioned, its heavy insulated walls dismantled, and the entire wing renovated into a sunlit conservatory and indoor playroom filled with climbing toys, miniature wooden pirate ships, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

The small, drafty staff quarters on the ground floor—where I had spent my first shifts wondering if my paycheck would clear—were permanently retired.

The grand south residential pavilion of the Moretti estate—a sprawling, six-bedroom private wing overlooking the rose gardens and the blue waters of the bay—had been completely transformed into an expansive, peaceful sanctuary for Elara, Leo, and Mia.

I walked onto the wide stone terrace wearing an elegant cream cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, holding a warm cup of Earl Grey tea.

Sitting on a soft woolen rug beneath the shade of ancient weeping willows, playing with a set of wooden building blocks, were Leo and Mia. Leo was laughing as he helped his sister build a tall tower, his small hands completely healed, his cheeks rosy with boundless health.

Lorenzo Moretti walked onto the stone terrace, dressed in a comfortable dark linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, carrying two crystal glasses of fresh raspberry lemonade.

He walked over to where I stood, resting his large, warm hand over mine on the stone balustrade, looking into my eyes with deep, unreserved reverence.

"The federal court formally unsealed the Thomas Vance memorial exoneration at noon today, Elara," Lorenzo said softly, his slate-gray eyes warm with unshakeable peace. "His engineering patents have been restored, his name cleared, and the state has awarded his estate full restitution."

Tears of profound, sacred joy welled in my eyes as I looked at the man who had torn down his own social circle to protect his family and me.

"You gave my father back his honor, Lorenzo," I whispered, resting my hand over his.

"You gave me back my soul, Elara," Lorenzo answered, bringing my fingers to his lips and kissing them with boundless tenderness. "You and the children gave this house a future."

Mia came running across the flagstones, her steps light, fast, and completely fearless, throwing her small arms around both of our legs with a joyful laugh that echoed across the bay like music.
