Chapter 3 - The Gala at Newport

Seventy-two hours later, the heavy wrought-iron gates of the Bellweather Estate in Newport, Rhode Island, parted beneath a torrential downpour.
The century-old limestone mansion stood perched on the edge of the Atlantic cliffs, its towering arched windows blazing with the golden light of five massive crystal chandeliers. Over two hundred of the most powerful corporate titans, private military contractors, and underground syndicate bosses in North America and Europe were gathered in black-tie attire, sipping vintage champagne while armed sentries patrolled the perimeter lawns with guard dogs.
The double mahogany entrance doors opened.
The chamberlain struck his silver staff against the marble floor, his voice echoing across the grand ballroom:
“Mr. Adrian Kane, Chairman of Kane Meridian Group, and his betrothed, Miss Clara Lin-Roberts.”
A breathless, stunned hush swept through the two hundred guests.
I walked down the grand marble staircase on Adrian’s arm.
I had traded my modest office pencil skirts for a bespoke, backless gown of midnight-blue velvet that cascaded to the floor in heavy, liquid folds. My dark hair was swept up into an intricate chignon fastened with antique sapphire pins, and on my finger, the eight-carat diamond caught the glare of the chandeliers like an open flame.
Adrian walked beside me in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture commanding absolute, terrifying sovereignty.
At the base of the staircase stood Marcus Sterling.
Sterling was fifty-five, with slicked-back silver hair, cold reptilian blue eyes, and a tailored white tuxedo jacket. Beside him stood his daughter, Veronica Sterling, whose painted red lips parted in pure, incredulous fury the moment she recognized the woman on Adrian’s arm.
“Adrian,” Sterling said, his voice dripping with condescending amusement as he raised a crystal flute. “What an unexpected theatrical entrance. We were informed you would be attending the succession assembly alone. And who is this charming creature? A temporary diversion before the board votes on your liquidation?”
Veronica stepped forward, her diamond earrings shaking with venomous disdain. “Father, that’s his secretary! She was fetching coffee in the Midtown lobby six months ago!”
Adrian did not flinch. He did not raise his voice.
He stepped smoothly between Marcus Sterling and me, his slate-gray eyes narrowing to sub-zero steel.
“The woman on my arm is Clara Kane, Marcus,” Adrian spoke, every syllable resonating across the silent hall with the force of an iron mallet. “She is the registered co-owner of Kane Meridian Group, the primary trustee of the Sovereign Maritime Vault, and the woman who just authorized the total freeze of your European liquidity accounts.”

Sterling’s smirk froze mid-curve.
Across the ballroom, the tablet in his personal wealth manager’s hands began chiming frantically with red priority alerts.
