Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Toast

The color drained from Marcus Sterling’s face so rapidly that his skin resembled wet chalk.

His wealth manager hurried over, sweating profusely, holding the screen toward Sterling’s face. “Mr. Sterling... the Swiss clearing house in Zurich just rejected our seventy-million-dollar collateral transfer! The system reports that our executive authorizations were superseded by a joint spousal mandate signed at 8:00 PM!”

Veronica gasped, grabbing her father’s arm. “Father! What is happening?”

“What is happening, Veronica,” I spoke up, stepping forward until I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Adrian, “is that you forgot who manages the operational logistics of this syndicate. You spent two years treating me like a ghost in the hallways. You forgot that ghosts have access to the master server keys.”

Sterling’s eyes burned with wild, cornered rage. He forced his mouth into a tight, grotesque smile, raising his champagne flute high into the air to address the watching room.

“A clever tactical maneuver, Adrian!” Sterling announced loudly, trying desperately to reclaim control of the room. “A toast, then! To the unexpected union of our Chairman and his brilliant new bride! Let us drink to the preservation of our council’s peace!”

A waiter in a dark livery jacket glided forward, carrying a silver tray with two crystal flutes filled with vintage Dom Pérignon.

Adrian reached out to take the glasses, but my hand caught his wrist with lightning speed.

My clinical, photographic memory—honed through two years of tracking every movement, every supplier, and every discrepancy in Adrian's empire—locked onto the waiter’s left cuff.

Beneath the white fabric of his sleeve, a faint, dark tattoo of a coiled viper was visible.

The calling card of the Balkan hit syndicate Sterling had hired three weeks ago.

“Don't drink it, Adrian,” I whispered, my voice calm, level, and deadly.

The waiter’s eyes widened in panic. He immediately dropped the tray, reaching inside his jacket for a suppressed sidearm.

Before the weapon could clear the leather, Adrian moved with blinding, military precision.

He drove his elbow forward into the waiter’s throat, knocking the man flat onto the marble floor with concussive force. The crystal flutes shattered against the stone, splashing champagne across the rug.

Where the liquid touched the brass floor grating, the metal instantly began to bubble, hissing with the caustic, acidic reaction of concentrated liquid cyanide.

A collective, terrified scream erupted from the two hundred high-society guests as women dropped their glasses and men scrambled toward the terrace exits.

“Containment Protocol!” Adrian roared, pulling a concealed Glock from beneath his tuxedo jacket. “Seal the exits! Nobody leaves this estate!”
