Chapter 2 - The Knock at Dawn

The morning sunlight filtered softly through the sheer curtains of my bedroom, casting warm amber patterns across the hardwood floor. I stretched lazily, feeling a lightness in my chest that felt almost miraculous. I rolled over to check the time on my phone: 7:18 a.m.
Suddenly, a violent, deafening series of heavy blows rattled my front door.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
The sound was frantic, aggressive, shaking the very frame of the house. I sat up quickly, throwing a robe over my shoulders, wondering if David had somehow returned from Cancun already, screaming because his credit cards had been declined at breakfast.
I walked down the stairs, peering through the living room window toward the porch.
There were no luxury suitcases. There was no tanned, smiling husband or guilt-ridden best friend. Instead, standing on my welcome mat were two solemn police officers in crisp dark uniforms, their faces etched with grim gravity. Behind them sat an unmarked cruiser with its blue and red lights flashing silently in the morning fog.
My heart gave a sharp, warning thud against my ribs. I unlocked the heavy deadbolt I had installed just hours earlier and pulled the front door open.
"Mrs. Clara Vance?" the older officer asked, his voice low and professional as he flashed a silver badge.
"Yes," I said, my throat suddenly dry. "Is something wrong, Officer?"
The officer exchanged a heavy, uncomfortable glance with his partner before looking back down at me. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a clear plastic evidence bag containing a blood-stained silver necklace—a necklace I instantly recognized as the one I had given Sarah for her thirtieth birthday.

"I’m Officer Miller, and this is Officer Davis," he said slowly, stepping closer. "We need you to come down to the station with us, Mrs. Vance. There’s been a homicide investigation opened regarding an incident at the Grand Oasis Resort in Cancun last night. We need to ask you some questions about your husband, David, and Ms. Sarah Jenkins."
The world tilted on its axis. The serene calm of the morning shattered into a million jagged pieces, plunging me into a nightmare far darker than any cheating scandal I could have ever imagined.
