Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Nursery LogsBy 2:00 a.m., the estate’s grand residential kitchen was illuminated by the warm, amber glow of the under-cabinet lighting.

Mia sat at the center island on an elevated barstool, eating a slice of warm sourdough toast with blackberry jam, her one-eared rabbit sitting beside her plate.
Clara sat across from her, holding a steaming mug of peppermint tea, while Alessandro stood near the copper prep sink, wearing an unbuttoned charcoal wool vest over his black shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.
Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, senior managing partner of Ross & Sterling International Legal, the supreme litigator who had served the Moretti family for four decades—walked into the kitchen carrying an encrypted digital tablet and an unsealed leather portfolio.
"Let’s review the pediatric nursing logs, Arthur," Alessandro commanded, his voice dropping into an octave of lethal calm.
Arthur Ross adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, sliding his stylus across the digital screen:
MORETTI RESIDENTIAL MEDICAL RETENTION LOGS
CHIEF NIGHT NURSE: ELEANOR CRANE (APPOINTED BY JULIAN MORETTI)
DAILY RETENTION INVOICE: $1,800.00 // DURATION: 11 MONTHS ($594,000.00)
PEDIATRIC MEDICATION PROTOCOL: HIGH-DOSE HYDROXYZINE SEDATIVE INFUSION.
Arthur looked up from the screen, his weathered face set in lines of cold, clinical disgust.
"The night nurse, Eleanor Crane, has not been administering basic developmental care, Alessandro," Arthur reported. "Over the past six months, she has been administering low-dose chemical sedatives to Sophia at 8:00 p.m. to keep the child unconscious until morning so she could sleep through her twelve-hour shifts."
Clara dropped her teacup onto the saucer with a sharp, horrified clank. "Sedatives? On a fourteen-month-old baby?"
"And when the sedative tolerance built up three weeks ago," Arthur continued, "Sophia began waking in withdrawal panic. Eleanor Crane reported to the board that Sophia was suffering from 'irreversible neurological trauma' inherited from Isabella's side of the family, recommending that the child be transferred to a private psychiatric residential facility in Switzerland before her second birthday."
Alessandro did not move. He did not raise his voice.
The air in the kitchen dropped ten degrees below freezing. The crystal pendants on the chandelier above the island hummed with a low, imperceptible vibration as the Don's slate-gray eyes locked onto the screen.
"Who authorized Eleanor Crane's contract, Arthur?" Alessandro asked softly.
"Julian Moretti," Arthur replied, his voice heavy with finality. "Your younger brother."
Arthur swiped the screen, displaying an unsealed Delaware Chancery deed:
THE SALVATORE & ISABELLA MORETTI SOVEREIGN SUCCESSION COVENANT
CLAUSE 14: IN THE EVENT OF THE INCAPACITATION, TERMINATION, OR PERMANENT RESIDENTIAL CONFINEMENT OF SOPHIA MORETTI BEFORE HER THIRD BIRTHDAY // 100% OF THE SIXTY-MILLION-DOLLAR DEEPWATER TERMINAL VOTING SHARES TRANSFER UNCONDITIONALLY TO THE MANAGING TRUSTEE: JULIAN MORETTI.
The entire monstrous architecture of the betrayal lay bare.
Julian had spent eleven months manufacturing the illusion that Sophia was medically broken, exploiting Alessandro’s paralyzed grief to justify institutionalizing his daughter in an overseas sanitarium.

With Sophia locked in Zurich and Alessandro consumed by sorrow, Julian would have executed an emergency judicial takeover of the sixty-million-dollar Newark terminals before the annual shareholders' assembly next month.
And three-year-old Mia, sneaking into the nursery to sing a lullaby, had shattered a multi-million-dollar conspiracy with a one-eared rabbit.
