Chapter 4 - The Severing of Eleanor CraneAt 6:30 a.m., the gray winter dawn broke over Long Island, casting cold shafts of pale light through the tall windows of the nursery wing.

Eleanor Crane—fifty-two years old, impeccably dressed in a tailored white medical lab coat, carrying her designer leather handbag—walked onto the second-floor landing with the relaxed, unhurried posture of a woman who had collected six hundred thousand dollars for sleeping through her shifts.
She turned the brass knob of the nursery door.
The door swung open.
Eleanor froze on the threshold.
Sitting in the velvet nursing armchair beside the crib, dressed in his black suit with his overcoat draped across the chairback, was Alessandro Moretti.
In his lap, sleeping peacefully beneath a soft yellow blanket, was fourteen-month-old Sophia.
Her small cheek rested against her father’s broad chest, her tiny fingers hooked firmly into the collar of his shirt.
Standing beside the changing station was Clara Rossi, holding three-year-old Mia’s hand.
And standing near the window, holding an unsealed, red-tabbed federal litigation portfolio, was Arthur Ross, flanked by Detective Marcus Thorne of the State Police Major Crimes Division and two armed tactical operators from Moretti Sovereign Security.
The color drained from Eleanor Crane’s face in a single, catastrophic wave, leaving her skin the sallow, grayish hue of wet lime.
"Mr... Mr. Moretti," Eleanor stammered, clutching her handbag against her ribs. "I... I was just coming to administer Sophia’s morning developmental assessment—"
"Set your bag on the table, Eleanor," Alessandro said softly.
His voice was a low, velvet baritone that shook the nursery walls.
Detective Thorne stepped forward, taking the designer handbag from Eleanor’s trembling fingers and emptying its contents onto the changing table.
Out spilled a makeup kit, a gold Cartier pen, and three unsealed, prescription-labeled amber glass vials of Liquid Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride bearing the forged signature of a corrupt pediatrician in White Plains.
"Fifty-four counts of felony child endangerment, medical fraud, and the unlawful administration of controlled substances to an infant," Detective Thorne announced, unrolling an unsealed arrest warrant stamped with the gold seal of the State of New York.
Eleanor backed against the doorframe, her breath hitching in her throat as hot tears of ruined vanity tore through her makeup.
"Mr. Moretti... please!" Eleanor sobbed, falling to her knees on the carpet. "Julian told me the baby was hyperactive! He said the board required a calm medical report! I was only following his instructions!"
Alessandro looked down at the woman on the floor with the cold, absolute detachment of an executioner closing a ledger.
"You drugged my daughter in her mother's crib, Eleanor," Alessandro whispered, each word dropping like lead onto stone. "You stole her peace, lied about her mind, and thought that because I was grieving, I was blind."

Alessandro turned to Detective Thorne.
"Take her out through the front entrance in handcuffs," Alessandro commanded. "In front of every employee on this estate. And let everyone in New York know what happens when someone poisons a child in my house."
