Chapter 3 - The Confession on the Terrace

The words fell into the room like detonated charges.

"He was in the black truck on the ridge," Isabella wept, her voice trembling but gaining strength with every syllable as she pointed her small finger directly at Dominic Vesceri. "Mama stopped at the red light near the ravine. Dominic got out of the truck. He had a metal bar. He hit the back of Mama's wheel until the oil came out, and when Mama screamed, he told her that the Moretti family belonged to him now."

Dominic’s breath seized in his throat. His aristocratic composure vanished entirely, replaced by the raw, feral panic of a cornered predator.

"You little liar!" Dominic roared, lunging forward with his arm outstretched to grab the girl.

Before his fingers could even cross the space between them, Vincent moved with blinding, terrifying speed.

His right hand clamped around Dominic’s throat like an hydraulic vice. Vincent drove Dominic backward with concussive force, slamming his spine through the heavy French glass doors of the terrace.

The safety glass exploded into a thousand glittering shards that rained down across the freezing stone balcony.

Sleet whipped into the room, swirling the white curtains in a violent vortex of winter air.

Dominic hung over the stone balustrade of the second-floor terrace, fifty feet above the frozen granite courtyard below, his face turning an agonizing shade of purple as Vincent’s fingers crushed his windpipe.

"Vincent... please..." Dominic choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Vincent’s iron grip. "The board... the board authorized it... the New York council..."

"My wife," Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with the absolute, sovereign fury of a man who had walked through hell to find the truth. "You murdered Sofia for thirty percent of my shipping terminals."

"I... I can give you the accounts..." Dominic gasped, his heels kicking against the stone railing. "Eighty million in Zurich... the offshore bonds..."

"I don't want your money, Dominic," Vincent said softly.

He pulled Dominic back from the ledge just enough to slam him face-down onto the shattered glass of the terrace floor. Vincent planted his heavy leather boot squarely between Dominic’s shoulder blades, pinning him flat against the stone.

Mateo and four tactical operators in black ballistic gear swarmed through the shattered frame, their carbines raised, clicking heavy steel transport zip-ties around Dominic’s wrists and ankles.

Vincent turned around, stepping back into the warm, carpeted room.

The winter wind blew through his graying hair, his black coat dusted with snow and glass, but his eyes were fixed entirely on his daughter.

Isabella ran across the floorboards.

She threw her small arms around her father’s waist, burying her face into his chest, sobbing with the boundless, unburdened relief of a child who had finally escaped the dark.

"Papa... Papa, you're here," she cried.

May you like

Vincent dropped to both knees on the rug, wrapping his massive arms around his daughter, lifting her off the ground, holding her close against his beating heart as tears of pure, healing joy streamed down his scarred face.

"I’m here, Bella," Vincent wept softly. "I’m here. You never have to be afraid again."
