Chapter 3 - The Tape beneath the Velvet

A low, familiar mechanical hiss filled the high-ceilinged room.
Then came the sound of rain drumming against glass, followed by a woman’s trembling, hurried breath.
"Vincent... if you are listening to this, it means I didn't make it home from the charity gala."
Vincent’s chest seized. His hands clenched into iron fists against the edge of the mahogany table.
It was Sofia.
Her voice was unmistakable—rich, cultured, and laced with the terrifying certainty of a mother who knew her minutes were numbered.
"Thirty minutes ago, while Dominic thought I was in the powder room, I accessed his private laptop in the boardroom suite," Sofia’s recorded voice continued, each word cutting through the dining room like a serrated razor. "Dominic has been secretly working with Marcus Vance in Boston. He has embezzled eighty million dollars from the Moretti maritime logistics accounts through dummy corporations in Panama. When I confronted him in the corridor, he told me that if I spoke a single word to you, he would ensure that neither Isabella nor I survived the drive across the bridge."
A concussive gasp tore from Sofia on the tape, followed by the sound of a vehicle door slamming and an engine revving.
"He cut the rear hydraulic brake line in the underground garage, Vincent! I can feel the pedal going soft under my foot—the warning sensor just flashed red! Protect our daughter! Protect Isabella! Dominic is—"
The recording ended with the deafening, concussive screech of tearing metal, the sound of shattered safety glass, and the violent roar of river water surging into a vehicle cabin before cutting to absolute, dead static.
Vincent Marlo stood motionless.
The tears that had welled in his dark eyes did not fall; they evaporated in the blinding, incandescent heat of a rage that had no bottom and no end.
Dominic Vesceri collapsed onto his knees on the hardwood floor, his silk tie crooked, his hands clawing at his throat as if an invisible garrote had already tightened around his windpipe.
"Vincent... please..." Dominic sobbed, tears cutting clean lines through his makeup. "Marcus Vance threatened my family! He said he would expose my offshore investments to the IRS! I tried to warn Sofia to stay home... I never wanted her to take the bridge!"
Vincent walked across the floorboards.
His footsteps were completely silent against the polished wood.
He stopped two inches from where Dominic knelt in pathetic ruin.

"You sat across from me at my wife's funeral, Dominic," Vincent whispered. His voice was barely a breath of cold air, yet it made the sixty-foot glass windows shiver. "You handed my crying seven-year-old daughter tissues. You told me that God takes the purest souls first."
Vincent reached down with his bare, calloused hand, his fingers clamping around Dominic’s throat with effortless, crushing hydraulic power, lifting the two-hundred-pound lawyer off the floor by his neck.
