Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction of the Debt

By 4:30 p.m., the private library on the ground floor of the Duca estate had been converted into an active forensic command bunker.

A massive fire roared in the carved limestone hearth, throwing warm golden light across the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and the forty-foot conference table where Lorenzo’s father had managed the East Coast maritime shipping lines thirty years earlier.

Emma was asleep on a deep velvet chaise lounge near the hearth, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, her wooden duck resting on the pillow beside her curls.

I sat in an oversized leather armchair, my hands coated in cooling medical silver-sulfadiazine ointment and wrapped in soft, sterile white gauze applied by Dr. Robert Sterling.

Lorenzo sat behind his massive walnut desk, having rolled his sleeves to his forearms, sipping black espresso from a porcelain cup.

Beside him sat Arthur Ross—seventy-four years old, impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, the chief corporate litigator who had represented the Duca family for four decades—and Chief Forensic Auditor David Sterling, who sat surrounded by thirty banker's boxes of unsealed corporate manifests and decrypted Cayman wire logs.

"Let’s review the domestic reports, Arthur," Lorenzo commanded, his baritone slicing through the quiet room.

Arthur Ross adjusted his wire-rimmed spectacles, tapping his digital stylus against the wall-mounted projection screen.

"The cruelty against Sophia was not an isolated display of temper, Lorenzo," Arthur reported, his weathered face set in lines of grim disgust. "Look at the financial records from the estate management account over the past six months."

An illuminated corporate cap sheet populated the screen:

THE DUCA RESIDENTIAL OPERATING TRUST // AUDIT 2026

PRIMARY AUTHORIZING SIGNATORY: ISABELLA ROSSI (ACTING HOUSEHOLD PROXY)

SALARY DEDUCTIONS: $18,400.00 EXTRACTED FROM SOPHIA VANCE-CALLAWAY.

FABRICATED CLAIMS: 14 BROKEN CRYSTAL INVOICES // 8 FABRICATED RUG RESTORATIONS.

"Isabella Rossi has been systematically withholding eighty percent of Sophia’s legal wages," Arthur revealed, his jaw tightening. "She forced Sophia to sign fraudulent liability promissory notes under the threat of terminating Emma’s nursery care, while pocketing the withheld funds through an offshore shell entity in Grand Cayman: Meridian Domestic Equities LLC."

"Why?" I asked, my voice trembling as the sheer magnitude of the theft became clear. "Why would a woman marrying a billionaire steal eighteen thousand dollars from a widowed cleaner?"

David Sterling zoomed in on the digital network diagram.

"Because your late husband, Thomas Callaway, was not killed in a random hit-and-run, Sophia," David revealed softly.

The room went dead silent.

I froze in my chair, the breath tearing out of my chest as if I had been struck by an iron bar. "Thomas...?"

"Thomas Callaway was the chief auditor for the Port of Newark," Arthur Ross explained, looking directly at Lorenzo. "Eight months ago, Thomas discovered that Julian Vance—the managing director of Apex Maritime Logistics and Isabella Rossi’s secret business partner—was siphoning sixty million dollars from the Duca pension stabilization reserve."

Arthur unrolled an unsealed, gold-embossed document:

THE DUCA-ROSSI MARITAL SUCCESSION ACCORD (DRAFT)

TERMS: UPON RATIFICATION OF THE WEDDING ON NOVEMBER 12 // FULL FIDUCIARY CONTROL OF THE $150M NEWARK DEEPWATER BERTHS TRANSFERS TO THE CONTROLLING TRUSTEE: JULIAN VANCE.

"Julian Vance and Isabella Rossi arranged the hit-and-run that murdered Thomas Callaway in Brooklyn," Arthur stated with clinical, chilling certainty. "When Sophia applied for a housekeeping job at this estate, Isabella recognized her name. She hired Sophia specifically to keep her under direct surveillance, break her spirit through constant humiliation, and manufacture fabricated theft charges against her so she would be sent to a state prison before the wedding took place."

Lorenzo did not speak for two full minutes.

He sat motionless, his slate-gray eyes fixed on the illuminated screen, the muscles in his jaw ticking with a subterranean, lethal fury that made the crystal decanters on his credenza hum against the wood.

He looked at my bandaged hands, then at three-year-old Emma sleeping peacefully beside the fire.

"Arthur," Lorenzo spoke into the stillness, his voice dropping into an octave of absolute, terrifying granite.

"Yes, Lorenzo?"

"Draft the emergency receivership petitions against Meridian Domestic Equities at dawn. Unseal the vehicular homicide warrants with the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. And tell Miss Rossi that her private dinner with the Don is about to begin."
