Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Estate

At 10:00 a.m. on Monday, the grand executive ballroom of the Duca Estate on Long Island was convened for a plenary assembly of all two hundred domestic, maritime, and security employees of the Duca family.

The vast room was flooded with morning light, the crystal chandeliers reflecting off the polished marble floorboards where every trace of past cruelty had been permanently scrubbed away.

Lorenzo Duca walked onto the raised mahogany stage in the center of the ballroom, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, looking out over the sea of gathered working men and women.

Beside him stood Sophia Callaway and three-year-old Emma.

The room fell into an immediate, respectful silence as Lorenzo adjusted the microphone.

"For six months, an arrogant, corrupt presence in this house operated under the belief that authority is built through cruelty, that human dignity is disposable, and that the working hands who keep our home safe can be broken in silence," Lorenzo began, his clear, resonant voice carrying cleanly across the silent hall. "Today, that lie is permanently buried."

The crowd listened in rapt, breathless attention.

"Item one," Lorenzo announced. "Sophia Callaway is hereby confirmed as Supreme Household Director and Chief Fiduciary Trustee of the Duca Residential Estate and Maritime Foundation, with absolute executive authority over all domestic operations, staffing budgets, and employee welfare programs."

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.

Mrs. Alvarez and the housekeeping staff rose to their feet, cheering and clapping, while I looked out over my colleagues with tears of boundless, sacred joy.

"Item two," Lorenzo continued, looking down at Emma where she stood proudly holding her wooden duck. "The Thomas and Emma Callaway Foundation for Port Worker Safety and Child Protection is officially endowed with fifty million dollars in permanent capital, providing full university scholarships, emergency legal defense, and comprehensive housing security for the families of every dockworker, domestic cleaner, and service employee across the state of New York."

The applause roared through the high-vaulted ceiling like a rising tide.

I stepped to the microphone, resting my bandaged hands flat on the podium.

"The doors are unlocked," I said softly into the microphone, my smile radiant and fearless. "Now let's build our home."
