Chapter 7 - The Echo of Six Years Ago

“Mia, I don’t know who you’re talking about,” I said, my voice trembling. “I’m your only mommy and you don’t have a daddy.”

“Yes, I do,” she said, her eyes sparkling. “He’s my daddy.”

I looked at Adrian again, and this time I saw a flicker of something in his eyes. It was regret. It was pain. It was the truth.

Adrian took a step closer to me, his face softening. “Mia, why do you think I’m your daddy?”

Mia looked at him, her eyes sparkling. “Because you look like me. You have my eyes. You have my nose. You have my mouth. You have my chin.”

She pointed to her own face, then to his. “We’re twins.”

I couldn’t breathe. I had always known there was something familiar about Adrian. Something that felt right. But I had pushed it away, buried it deep in the back of my mind. Now, Mia was bringing it all back.

“Mia,” I said, my voice trembling. “I don’t know who you’re talking about. I’m your only mommy and you don’t have a daddy.”
