Chapter 6 - The Exhumation of Thomas
Three days later, beneath a gray, weeping autumn sky, a solemn gathering assembled at the historic Oakridge Cemetery on the outskirts of the county.
A specialized team of state forensic pathologists, overseen by Dr. Sarah Lin and Detective Raymond Vance, supervised the exhumation of Thomas Vance’s bronze casket from the family mausoleum.
The suspicions raised by Thomas’s private diary had prompted the State Medical Examiner to issue an emergency exhumation and autopsy order, authorized by Circuit Judge Evelyn Montgomery.
Forty-eight hours later, Dr. Jonathan Hayes, the Chief Medical Examiner for the State, met Michael, Frank Callahan, and me in the private consultation suite at the regional forensic laboratory.
Dr. Hayes was a sixty-five-year-old forensic pathologist with silver hair and a quiet, clinical precision that commanded absolute authority. He placed a printed mass-spectrometry graph on the conference table.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Dr. Hayes began gently, his voice solemn. "We conducted a comprehensive deep-tissue, bone marrow, and hair-shaft analysis on your father's preserved remains."
"What did you find, Doctor?" Michael asked, his jaw set tight.
"Thomas Vance did not die of natural hypertensive heart failure," Dr. Hayes stated firmly. "His bone marrow and deep organ tissues contained lethal, chronic concentrations of aconitine metabolites and concentrated digitalis glycosides."
Michael’s knuckles whitened against the armrest of his chair.
"The segmental hair analysis demonstrates an ingestion pattern spanning fourteen months prior to his death in October 2018," Dr. Hayes continued. "He was being administered sub-lethal micro-doses on a weekly basis, systematically weakening his cardiovascular system until a final, massive dose induced a fatal cardiac arrest."
Detective Raymond Vance stepped into the light from the back of the room, holding a newly printed legal document bearing the gold seal of the State Superior Court.
"The Grand Jury has just returned a superseding capital indictment against Carol Vance," Detective Vance announced. "Count One: First-Degree Premeditated Capital Murder for Financial Gain in the death of Thomas Vance."

"Bail has been permanently revoked without possibility of reconsideration," Vance replied. "She will remain in the maximum-security wing of the state correctional facility until her trial."
