Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of the Hearth

By late November, the lakeside estate had been officially transferred into the permanent ownership of the Thomas & Emma Vance Family Trust.
Michael, Jenna, and I returned to the house with a team of professional contractors, landscapers, and restoration specialists.
The dark, oppressive atmosphere that Carol had cultivated for decades was systematically dismantled.
The greenhouse where the poisonous monkshood and digitalis had been cultivated was leveled to the ground, the soil excavated and replaced with clean river sand and fresh loam. In its place, we constructed an open-air cedar gazebo surrounded by blooming lavender, white hydrangeas, and sweet climbing jasmine.
The dining room—the room where my daughter had nearly lost her life—was completely remodeled.
The heavy mahogany dining table and the ornate crystal chandeliers were removed and sold at a private charity auction, with all proceeds donated directly to the St. Jude Pediatric Toxicology Research Center.
We installed wide, floor-to-ceiling glass French doors that let the golden afternoon sunlight flood the room, white oak flooring, and a round, handcrafted farmhouse table of natural cherry wood.
Emma, fully recovered and glowing with vibrant health, ran through the sunlit rooms in her favorite yellow corduroy overalls, laughing as she played tag with Barnaby, a gentle golden retriever puppy Michael had adopted for her seventh birthday.
Jenna walked into the kitchen carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade, setting it on the island before wrapping her arms around my shoulders.
"Thank you, Sarah," Jenna whispered, her eyes shining with tears of deep, healing peace. "For not hating me. For letting me be part of your family."
"You are our family, Jenna," I smiled, turning to embrace her warmly. "You stood up and told the truth when it mattered most. You saved my daughter's life."
Michael walked in from the terrace, carrying Emma on his shoulders, his face relaxed and radiant with a happiness he had not known since childhood.
He looked around the bright, sunlit kitchen where no secrets or shadows remained, his eyes locking onto mine with boundless, eternal love.

"We brought the light home, Sarah," Michael murmured, kissing my cheek.
"We built a sanctuary, Michael," I replied, holding his hand. "And it will stand forever."
