Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Vance Syndicate

At eight o'clock on Monday morning, the fifty-story Vance Tower in downtown Dallas was placed under comprehensive federal quarantine.

Four SWAT tactical teams and forty armed agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the executive suites, seizing sixty server terminals, offshore accounting ledgers, and the private correspondence of Senator Richard Vance.

Inside the grand boardroom on the top floor, Senator Vance sat behind his mahogany desk, surrounded by six high-priced defense litigators, frantically attempting to wire eighty million dollars to a private holding firm in Zurich.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were kicked open with concussive force.

Detective Raymond Callahan and Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Reed strode into the room, flanked by federal marshals with carbines drawn.

"Richard Vance," Marcus Reed boomed, his voice echoing across the panoramic glass suite. "Step away from the terminal. Under emergency warrants issued by the Federal District Court, all domestic and foreign assets of the Vance Political Action Committee and Vance Capital Holdings are frozen immediately."

Senator Vance jumped to his feet, his aristocratic face mottled with rage. "You have no jurisdiction here! I am a sitting United States Senator! I chair the Senate Judiciary Committee!"

"You were stripped of your committee chairmanship forty minutes ago by emergency executive resolution, Senator," Detective Callahan replied, tossing a thick red binder onto the desk. "We have the audio recordings extracted from Ethan Caldwell’s private phone. You explicitly authorized the procurement of the thallium sulfate and promised to suppress the state toxicology lab reports through your contacts in the Department of Public Safety."

The six defense litigators took one collective look at the binder, closed their briefcases, and stepped back toward the wall, completely abandoning their client.

Two federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Senator Vance’s arms, twisting them behind his tailored suit, and clicking heavy steel transport handcuffs around his wrists.

"My daughter had nothing to do with this!" Vance shrieked, thrashing against the marshals' grip as he was dragged toward the elevators. "Lila is innocent!"

"Your daughter signed the corporate proxy assigning the stolen trust funds to her private offshore account twenty minutes before she walked down the aisle on Saturday, Senator," Marcus Reed said coldly. "She is being processed in holding cell four right now."
