Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Estate

While the federal net was closing around the Vance political machine, I returned to the five-acre Caldwell estate in Highland Park—the home I had built with my own hands during our twelve-year marriage.

Under the terms of the emergency court injunction, Ethan had been stripped of all residential privileges, and the property had been permanently reassigned to the Thomas & Noah Vance Family Trust.

I arrived accompanied by a team of professional movers, contractors, and forensic locksmiths.

The house was cold, smelling of stale expensive cologne, champagne, and the toxic arrogance that had poisoned our lives. Every piece of custom furniture, every designer painting, and every luxury watch Ethan had purchased using stolen trust funds was methodically cataloged, removed, and loaded into transport trucks to be sold at public bankruptcy auction.

I walked into the master bedroom suite.

On the center of the bed sat Lila’s discarded designer luggage, her bridal magazines, and the arrogant letters Ethan had drafted to the family court describing me as an incompetent mother.

I swept the entire pile off the bed into a heavy commercial trash bin with a single, clean motion of my arm.

Noah walked into the room, holding his favorite wooden drafting compass—the compass his grandfather had given him before he passed away.

"Mom," Noah said, looking around the empty, sunlit room. "Can we paint the walls blue? Like the ocean?"

I knelt down, wrapping my arms around my son, burying my face in his neck, feeling the clean, pure warmth of our real life returning.

"We can paint them any color you want, Noah," I whispered through tears of unburdened joy. "This house belongs to us now. Only us."
