Chapter 2 - The Trap Unravels

Panic was a tangible thing inside St. Maren’s Church, thick and metallic, coating the back of everyone's throat.

Peter’s face drained of color, his skin turning the pale, sickly shade of spoiled milk. The carefully cultivated charm that had reeled me in three years ago—the blue sweaters, the easy laughter, the gentle way he wiped cranberry sauce off a child's shoe—vanished like smoke, revealing the panicked, desperate coward underneath.

"You... you weren't supposed to get involved," Peter stammered, retreating another step until the back of his knees hit the mahogany altar rail. "This was supposed to be clean. A public rejection. She ruins the dress, I walk away, the contract gets signed."

My breath hitched. *Contract?*

What contract? What was Peter talking about?

Before I could process the words, Adrian Vescari took another slow, calculated step forward. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees. The two hundred wedding guests—my neighbors, the parishioners, my weeping mother in the front row—held their collective breath, too terrified to even whisper.

"You thought you could use Molly as leverage to settle your debts with the East Side development syndicate," Adrian said, his voice dangerously calm, devoid of any warmth. "You thought by publically humiliating her, you’d break her spirit, force her to sign over the deed to St. Maren’s community kitchen property, and hand it over to your crooked corporate partners for a quick million-dollar payout."

My chest tightened so hard I thought my ribs would snap.

*The kitchen.*

The community kitchen wasn't just a building to me. For eight years, it had been my sanctuary, my purpose, the place where I fed the broken, the forgotten, the hungry of Buffalo's east side. It was where I had poured my soul after the ghosts of my fifteen-year-old self tried to drag me back down. And Peter—the man I loved, the man who had whispered *‘You’re safe with me’*—had engineered my public humiliation as a corporate hostile takeover.

"She doesn't even own the deed!" Peter shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria. "The parish council does! But you... you manipulated the zoning! You protected her!"

"I protect what matters," Adrian replied smoothly. He turned his head slightly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my knees weak. "And Molly matters, Peter. Far more than you ever deserved to realize."

My mother finally broke through the paralyzed crowd, her face stained with tears, rushing up the aisle. "Molly! Baby, get away from him! That's Adrian Vescari! People like him—"

"People like him just exposed the man you were about to let marry your daughter," Adrian interrupted, his tone chillingly polite as he addressed my mother without breaking eye contact with me. He reached into the inner pocket of his charcoal overcoat and pulled out a thick manila folder.

He tossed it onto the altar, right beside the golden chalice. It landed with a heavy, ominous thud.

"Inside that folder," Adrian continued, looking back at Peter, who was now trembling so violently he could barely stand, "is every financial wire transfer, every text message, and every offshore account statement linking you to the Henderson Group. They paid you seventy-five thousand dollars upfront to secure the demolition permits for St. Maren’s kitchen lot. The wedding was just your twisted idea of a grand finale—a way to break her publicly so she wouldn't have the strength to fight the eviction notice."

The silence in the church was absolute. You could hear the hum of the old fluorescent lights overhead.

My mother stared at Peter, her mouth open in horror. "Peter... is this true? You... you planned all of this?"

Peter didn't answer. He just looked at Adrian with pure, unadulterated venom. "You ruined everything. You were supposed to stay out of it!"

"I don't stay out of things when vermin try to burn down my city," Adrian said softly.

Before Peter could bolt toward the side exit, Adrian's two massive guards moved with terrifying speed. In a fraction of a second, Peter’s arms were pinned behind his back, his face pressed unceremoniously against the altar railing.

"Get your hands off me!" Peter screamed, thrashing wildly. "You can't do this! This is kidnapping! This is—"

"This is consequences," Adrian said quietly. He turned back to me, his expression softening just a fraction, the sharp edges of his dangerous persona melting away into something impossibly tender. He extended his hand toward me.

"Molly," he said softly, his voice cutting through the chaos of the ruined church. "Take off the veil. Let's go home."
