Chapter 3 - The Web of the Bell Family

Adrian did not leave the boardroom with dignity. He was escorted out by building security—the very guards he had hired, men who now took their orders from Elena Vance and the Hartwell security detail. Vanessa had tried to follow him, screaming obscenities through the executive corridor, but the harsh reality of her brother’s impending legal catastrophe had shattered her composure entirely.

By noon, the penthouse floor of Vale Enterprises had been sanitized. Forensic accountants from Arthur Hartwell’s private advisory team were combing through every hard drive, every server log, and every encrypted message exchanged between Adrian Vale, Vanessa Bell, and Marcus Bell over the past twenty-four months.

I sat in what used to be Adrian’s office, behind the massive glass-and-steel desk he had imported from Milan to signify his ascent into the ranks of the city's elite. My father sat across from me in a deep leather armchair, nursing a cup of black tea, while Elena systematically pinned photographs, financial diagrams, and corporate flowcharts onto a rolling corkboard.

“The deeper we dig, the uglier it gets, Clara,” Elena said, tapping a photograph of Marcus Bell. “Marcus wasn't just skimming from Adrian. Adrian was his target from the very beginning.”

I traced the rim of my porcelain cup, feeling the dull ache in my bruised jaw. “How far back does it go?”

“Four years,” Elena replied, flipping open a financial summary. “Before you met Adrian, his initial startup was ninety days away from bankruptcy. Marcus Bell was working as a mid-tier financial consultant at an asset management firm. Marcus discovered that Adrian had an exceptional concept for supply-chain routing, but zero business sense. But Marcus also discovered something far more valuable.”

Elena looked directly at my father. “He discovered that Clara was living in the city under an assumed, truncated surname—Clara Hart—working at an independent arts non-profit. Marcus knew who she was. He purposely steered Adrian into Clara’s social orbit.”

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the office.

I felt as though the breath had been violently sucked from my lungs. The memory of my first meeting with Adrian rushed back over me: a rainy evening outside a small gallery in Soho, an umbrella gallantly offered, a warm smile, a cup of coffee that turned into four hours of conversation. Adrian had seemed so earnest, so completely unimpressed by high society, so dedicated to building something honest with his own two hands.

“Adrian didn't know,” I whispered, the realization tasting like ash in my mouth. “Adrian genuinely thought it was an accident.”

“Adrian is an arrogant narcissist, Clara,” my father said, his voice deep and rumbling with paternal sorrow. “Men like Adrian are easily manipulated by flatterers. Marcus Bell realized that if Adrian married you, our family would never allow Adrian’s company to fail. Marcus knew I would quietly provide loan guarantees, intellectual property protections, and institutional backing to keep my daughter’s husband solvent.”

“And once the company reached a multi-hundred-million-dollar valuation,” Elena added, “Marcus moved his sister into place.”

Elena pinned a photograph of Vanessa Bell beside Marcus’s face.

“Vanessa wasn't just Adrian’s mistress,” Elena continued with razor-sharp precision. “She was the closer. Her job was to systematically destroy your marriage from the inside out. Marcus needed Adrian to alienate you completely, force a divorce, and reallocate the spousal shares before Adrian realized that Marcus was systematically siphoning the core intellectual property into overseas accounts in Cyprus and the Cayman Islands.”

“And the pregnancy?” I asked, a bitter knot twisting in my stomach. “Vanessa stood in my home last night, rested her hands on her stomach, and looked at me like I was an empty shell while she carried Adrian’s legacy.”

Elena walked over to the desk and dropped a confidential medical file in front of me.

“We obtained this from a private fertility clinic in Manhattan thirty minutes ago via court subpoena,” Elena said calmly. “Vanessa Bell visited the clinic three weeks ago. She is pregnant, Clara. But the gestational timeline does not match Adrian’s travel schedule during his last European funding tour.”

I opened the folder. The medical reports were unequivocal.

“The child is not Adrian’s?” I asked, looking up.

“DNA testing will be required for conclusive legal proof,” Elena noted, “but based on the clinic’s records, Vanessa was undergoing private treatments with a donor profile long before Adrian initiated their domestic arrangement. Marcus needed Vanessa to be pregnant to ensure that Adrian would act with reckless haste. A pregnant mistress creates panic, urgency, and moral blindness. Adrian was so terrified of a public scandal ruining his image that he agreed to rush the divorce papers Marcus had his personal attorneys draw up.”

I stared at the medical documents. The sheer depravity of it was staggering. Adrian had beaten me, humiliated me, and destroyed our three-year marriage for a woman who was treating him like an unwitting financial host for a parasitic scheme.

“Where is Marcus now?” I asked.

“He missed his scheduled flight to Zurich this morning,” Elena replied. “The border alerts we triggered prevented him from boarding using his primary passport. He’s gone to ground in the city, likely attempting to access the remaining cold-storage cryptocurrency wallets he set up using your forged signature.”

Suddenly, the private line on Adrian’s desk began to ring.

We all looked at it. It was an internal building intercom line connecting directly to the private parking garage below the tower.

I pressed the speaker button. “Yes?”

“Mrs... Mrs. Hartwell?” It was the voice of the head of private security. “Mr. Vale is down here in the private garage. He refused to leave the premises. He slipped past the perimeter guards and is currently demanding to see you. He’s... ma’am, he’s in a very bad way. He’s hysterical. Should we call the metropolitan police to have him arrested for trespassing and assault?”

My father immediately shook his head, signaling me to stay upstairs, to let the law handle the broken remnants of Adrian Vale.

I looked down at the bruises on my arms, then at the forged financial documents bearing the name of the woman who had spent three years cleaning his home and loving him in silence.

“No,” I spoke into the intercom. “Do not call the police yet. Detain him in the private VIP lounge in the lower concourse. I am coming down.”

“Clara, no,” my father said, standing up with his cane. “You do not need to subject yourself to that animal again. He belongs in a cell.”

May you like

“He will go to a cell, Father,” I said, turning to look at the man who had protected me my entire life. “But Adrian Vale spent three years convincing himself that I was nothing without him. He needs to look into the eyes of the woman who created him, and realize that he was nothing without me.”
