Chapter 5 - Cornered Predators

By evening, the scandal had erupted across every media platform in the country.
The story had everything the public craved: a glamorous billionaire tech entrepreneur revealed to be a violent domestic abuser, a secret heiress emerging from the shadows to reclaim her stolen birthright, and a brazen multi-million-dollar corporate embezzlement conspiracy.
On social media, the narrative spread like wildfire. Leaked footage of Adrian being removed from his own corporate headquarters by security went viral, accompanied by official statements from the Hartwell Group confirming the revocation of all licensing agreements and the filing of felony assault charges. Public sympathy swung entirely, violently, in my favor. The brands that had previously clamored to partner with Adrian Vale released frantic public statements terminating their contracts within minutes of each other.
Meanwhile, in a dilapidated private marina on the western edge of Long Island, rain fell in relentless sheets over the dark water.
Vanessa Bell sat in the passenger seat of an unmarked black SUV, staring anxiously at the dark pier. Beside her were three designer suitcases stuffed with jewelry, high-end watches, and seventy thousand dollars in liquid cash she had managed to withdraw from Adrian’s personal emergency safe before his domestic accounts were sealed.
The driver’s door opened, and Marcus Bell slid into the vehicle, soaking wet, his trench coat smelling of damp salt and cheap tobacco. His face was drawn, his usual suave arrogance replaced by the feral, twitching paranoia of a hunted animal.
“Did you get the boat?” Vanessa demanded, her voice shrill and trembling. “Marcus! The police were at my apartment! They searched the lobby! Adrian’s lawyers have already served the clinic with a subpoena! They know about the pregnancy, Marcus! They know!”
“Shut up!” Marcus snarled, slamming his fist against the steering wheel. “Stop screaming! Do you think I don't know what’s happening? Clara’s father has put a half-million-dollar private bounty on my location. Every dirty cop and private investigator from Boston to DC is looking for my car!”
“Where is the offshore money?” Vanessa cried, grabbing his arm. “The twelve million! You told me it was safe in the Cyprus shell! You told me all we had to do was get through this week, let Adrian take the fall for the corporate collapse, and we’d be living in Greece by Sunday!”
Marcus stared through the rain-streaked windshield, his jaw working convulsively. “The accounts are frozen, Vanessa.”
Vanessa’s hand slipped from his arm. “What?”
“Elena Vance filed an international emergency Mareva injunction through the High Court in London at noon,” Marcus whispered, the horror finally breaking through his voice. “The British authorities notified the Cypriot regulators. The entire fund is locked. I can’t touch a single dollar without triggering an Interpol red notice that will pinpoint my IP address within seconds.”
“You idiot!” Vanessa screamed, lunging at him, her manicured nails raking across his cheek. “You incompetent fool! You used me! You told me to sleep with that pathetic, weak-minded Adrian! You made me carry this pregnancy to trap him, and now I have nothing! I’m going to prison because of you!”
Marcus shoved her violently back into the passenger seat, his eyes wild and bloodshot. “I said shut up! We still have one card left to play.”
Vanessa pressed her back against the door, breathing heavily, clutching her bruised shoulder. “What card? There are no cards left! Clara has the company, she has the money, and she has the law!”
Marcus reached beneath his coat and pulled out a heavy, dark semi-automatic pistol, sliding the magazine into the grip with a sharp, sickening metallic click.
“Clara thinks she’s untouchable because she’s sitting in her father’s glass fortress,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural whisper. “She thinks she won the war in that boardroom this morning. But she’s soft. She spent three years letting Adrian beat her down because she’s sentimental. She cares about appearances. She cares about justice.”
“Marcus, what are you doing?” Vanessa whispered, real terror finally dawning in her eyes. “You can't go after her. Arthur Hartwell will hunt you to the ends of the earth!”
“Arthur Hartwell will sign whatever document I put in front of him if I have his only daughter,” Marcus hissed, turning the ignition key. The SUV’s engine roared to life with a low, predatory rumble. “Clara is scheduled to attend the preliminary deposition at the Southern District federal courthouse tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. She won’t make it to that deposition.”
Marcus turned his head, his cold, unhinged gaze locking onto his sister.
“You’re going to call Adrian,” Marcus ordered.
“Adrian?” Vanessa choked out. “Adrian hates me! He knows about the baby! He knows everything!”
“Adrian is a desperate, broken dog,” Marcus sneered. “He has no money, no pride, and no future. You’re going to call him, you’re going to cry, you’re going to tell him that I forced you into everything, and that you’re terrified for the baby’s life. You’re going to tell him that if he wants to save his child and get revenge on the woman who destroyed his life, he needs to meet us at the warehouse behind the old rail yards tonight.”
“Why?” Vanessa whimpered.
Marcus smiled—a grotesque, hollow baring of teeth in the dark car.

“Because every great tragedy needs a scapegoat, little sister. And Adrian Vale is going to take the blame for Clara Hartwell’s final disappearance.”
