Chapter 4 - Camilla's Desperate Bargain

By noon, the business world was in an absolute frenzy.
*The Wall Street Journal* had run the headline on its digital front page: **AURELIA SYSTEMS SAVED BY SECRET HEIRESS; CSO TERMINATED AMID MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD PROBE.** Photos of Julian being turned away from his luxury gym and private club had already gone viral across financial Twitter and LinkedIn, his face plastered everywhere beneath captions detailing his disgraced fall.
Inside the Northstar Holdings headquarters on Park Avenue—an office Julian had never once visited because he had assumed Northstar was a boutique firm run by "boring middle-aged trust managers"—I sat at the head of a twenty-seat conference table.
Daniel Cho entered, shutting the frosted door behind him.
"She’s here," Daniel said. "She’s terrified. Her lawyer is sitting in the waiting area, but she asked to speak with you alone for five minutes."
"Bring her in," I said.
A moment later, Camilla Price stepped through the door.
She looked nothing like the radiant, predatory woman who had slipped her arm through my husband’s tuxedo sleeve eighteen hours earlier. She wore no makeup; her eyes were swollen and red from crying, and her tailored designer clothes had been replaced by a simple gray turtleneck and dark trousers. Her ears were bare, the lobes bruised slightly from where she had frantically torn the earrings off the night before.
She didn't sit. She stood five feet from the table, clutching a manila envelope to her chest like a shield.
"Nora," she began, her voice cracked and small.
"Ms. Vance," Daniel corrected sharply from the doorway.
Camilla swallowed hard. "Ms. Vance. I... I know nothing I can say will make you forgive me. I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I know what I did. I was ambitious, I was flattered by Julian’s attention, and I let him convince me that you were just an obstacle he had outgrown."
"You took my mother’s jewelry, Camilla," I said, my voice flat. "You put them on your ears, walked into a room filled with people who knew me, and stood beside my husband while he shoved me. You didn't just sleep with him. You tried to erase me."
Camilla flinched as if struck. "He told me you didn't care! He told me you two hadn't shared a bed in three years, that you were cold, that you stayed married only for the social standing! He gave me those earrings from a velvet box in his glove compartment. I swear on my life, I didn't know they were your mother's. If I had known—"
"Save the performance for the federal prosecutor, Camilla," I said. "What is in the envelope?"
Camilla looked down at the paper in her hands. Her fingers trembled as she placed it on the mahogany table and slid it toward me.
"Julian’s private ledger," she whispered. "Not the one he kept on his work laptop. The one he kept on an encrypted drive hidden inside the air conditioning vent of our Tribeca apartment."
Daniel stepped forward immediately, picking up the envelope and inspecting its contents. Inside was a sleek, black hardware security key along with four pages of handwritten alphanumeric passwords.
"Why are you giving this to me?" I asked, looking up at her. "You’re an accessory to every charge the SEC is preparing."
"Because Julian tried to make me take the fall," Camilla said, a flash of pure, venomous hatred cutting through her tears. "At nine this morning, while I was sitting with my attorney, Julian’s criminal defense counsel called mine. Julian offered to testify that *I* was the one who forged his signature on the Bell Advisory wire transfers. He claimed I seduced him to gain access to Aurelia’s financial authorization codes. He’s trying to send me to a federal penitentiary for twenty years so he can walk away with a plea deal."
She leaned forward, her knuckles resting on the table.
"That drive has everything, Ms. Vance. It has the recorded Zoom calls between Julian and Lucas Bell. It has the bank account routing numbers in Zurich where Julian stashed six million dollars from previous Aurelia contracts before Northstar stepped in. And it has the blueprint of what they were planning to do to you."
Daniel looked up from the password sheet, his eyes dark. "Nora, this key is real. It’s an enterprise-grade cold wallet and encrypted drive."
"What were they planning to do to me, Camilla?" I asked softly.
Camilla took a deep, shuddering breath. "They were going to have you declared legally incapacitated. Julian had already paid an off-the-books physician fifty thousand dollars to fabricate medical documentation alleging you were suffering from severe, early-onset psychiatric deterioration. The moment Aurelia went into bankruptcy, Julian was going to petition for conservatorship over your estate so he could liquidate the Vance trusts to cover his debts to Richard Mercer."
The room seemed to drop ten degrees.
Even Daniel, who had spent fifteen years dissecting the darkest corners of corporate greed, looked visibly sickened.
I sat in silence for ten long seconds, my hands resting lightly in my lap. I thought of the seven years I had spent making sure Julian’s favorite meals were prepared when he returned from late flights. I thought of the times I had held his hand in hospital waiting rooms when his father passed away. I thought of how I had deliberately kept Northstar’s immense wealth quiet, fearing that revealing my power would bruise his fragile masculinity.
And all the while, he had been measuring me for a cage.
"Daniel," I said, my voice cold, steady, and lethal. "Call the United States Attorney’s office. Tell them we have the master key."
I turned my eyes back to Camilla.
"You will sign a full, sworn affidavit detailing everything you just told me. You will cooperate fully with the Department of Justice. If you do that, Northstar will not file a private civil suit against you for the recovery of corporate funds, and Sarah Sterling will recommend that your cooperation be noted during sentencing."
Camilla broke down, sobbing with relief, nodding frantically. "Thank you. Thank you, Ms. Vance. I’ll sign whatever you want. Anything."

"Get her out of my sight," I told Daniel.
