Chapter 5 - The Lucas Bell Trap

The following evening, the private dining room at Le Bernardin was quiet, reserved under an alias that cost five thousand dollars just to secure on two hours’ notice.

Sitting across from me was Lucas Bell.

He was forty-two, sharply dressed in an Italian double-breasted suit, with silver-streaked hair styled with ruthless precision and the cold, assessing eyes of a professional loan shark who had learned how to use corporate law instead of brass knuckles. He had arrived believing he was meeting an intermediary representing Northstar Holdings who was interested in a quiet, out-of-court settlement.

He hadn't expected me.

"Ms. Vance," Lucas said, leaning back as the sommelier poured a rare vintage Burgundy into his glass. He didn't look remotely rattled. "I must admit, your sudden emergence from the domestic shadows has been the talk of every trading desk in the city. Quite the performance at the anniversary gala."

"It wasn't a performance, Lucas," I said, ignoring the wine untouched before me. "It was an eviction."

Lucas smiled, showing a row of porcelain-veneered teeth. "Julian was always an idiot. He had champagne tastes, a beer brain, and zero discipline. I warned him six months ago that flaunting that girl in front of you was reckless. But men with small egos and newly stolen money rarely listen to reason."

"And you?" I asked. "Do you listen to reason?"

Lucas took a delicate sip of his wine, savoring it before setting the glass down with a soft click against the white linen.

"I am a businessman, Nora. May I call you Nora? Let’s not pretend Aurelia was a charity. Aurelia was bleeding ten million a quarter before I ever touched it. I simply helped Julian redirect assets that were going to be incinerated anyway. You bought fifty-eight percent of the debt, which makes you the captain of a sinking ship. But the intellectual property—the algorithms that govern Aurelia’s automated defense networks—are already legally licensed to Vespera Tech."

"Vespera Tech has no legal standing," I replied calmly.

Lucas chuckled, reaching into his interior pocket and withdrawing a single sheet of paper. He slid it across the tablecloth toward me.

"That is a certified copy of the intellectual property licensing agreement signed fourteen months ago by Julian Mercer, in his full legal capacity as Aurelia’s Chief Strategy Officer, authorized under Board Resolution 402. The license is irrevocable, non-exclusive, and transfers full global deployment rights to Vespera Tech for the sum of one dollar."

He leaned forward, his smile turning razor-thin.

"You own the shell, Nora. You own eight hundred employees, four office leases, and forty million dollars in unserviceable debt. But the brain of Aurelia—the code that makes it worth three billion dollars to the Pentagon—belongs to me and Richard Mercer. If you want that code back, Northstar will surrender sixty percent of its equity to Vespera. Otherwise, Aurelia’s stock will collapse to zero by Friday, and those eight hundred people you gave that stirring speech to will be cleaning out their desks with cardboard boxes."

I looked down at the document. Then, slowly, I reached into my handbag.

I didn't pull out a legal counter-suit. I didn't pull out a settlement offer.

I pulled out a small, audio recording device and placed it on the white linen between us.

Beside it, I laid a printed transcript bearing the official stamp of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Lucas’s smile faltered slightly. His eyes flicked from the recorder to the transcript. "What is that?"

"Board Resolution 402 was never ratified by a legal quorum, Lucas," I said, my voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register that made his posture stiffen. "Because the board members who supposedly signed it were in Geneva at the time, attending an international aerospace conference. Their signatures were digital forged tokens generated by an IP address originating from your private townhouse in Soho."

Lucas didn't move.

"Furthermore," I continued, "Vespera Tech isn't just an offshore shell company. Three days ago, Daniel Cho discovered that forty-nine percent of Vespera’s ultimate beneficial ownership is held by a holding company registered in Dubai, which is owned by a Russian state-linked enterprise currently under Tier-1 sanctions by the United States Department of the Treasury."

Every trace of color vanished from Lucas Bell’s face. The arrogance in his posture withered into absolute rigidity.

"You didn't just commit corporate fraud, Lucas," I said, watching his pupils dilate with terror. "You sold restricted Department of Defense logistics code to a foreign adversary through a sanctioned front company. That isn't grand larceny. That isn't an SEC violation. That is treason under Title 18 of the United States Code."

"You’re bluffing," Lucas whispered, his voice trembling. "Julian didn't know about the Dubai accounts. There's no paper trail linking me to—"

"Julian didn't know," I agreed. "Julian was too stupid to understand what you were using him for. But Camilla’s encrypted drive had your direct wire instructions. And thirty minutes ago, FBI tactical agents executed a search warrant on your townhouse in Soho."

The heavy oak doors of the private dining room swung open.

Four armed federal agents, led by an Assistant United States Attorney, stepped into the room.

Lucas Bell slowly pushed his chair back. His hands were shaking so violently that he knocked his wine glass over, sending a dark, bloody stain spreading across the crisp white tablecloth.

"Lucas Bell," the federal agent announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit espionage, wire fraud, and violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act."

Lucas looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief and shock as the cold steel snapped around his wrists.

I picked up my handbag, stood up, and looked down at the dark red wine pooling beside his untouched plate.

May you like

"Enjoy your dinner, Lucas," I said, and walked out into the cool Manhattan night.
