Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

“Audit?” Arthur scoffed, sitting up straight, puffing out his chest with righteous indignation. “Listen here, young lady—my son runs a tight ship! He is a respected corporate manager, a dedicated provider—there is nothing in that folder that requires an audit!”
“Are you sure about that, Arthur?” I asked, sliding the manila folder an inch toward him across the table. “Because according to these bank statements, Daniel hasn’t just been managing our household. He’s been managing a second household down on Elm Street.”
The word hung in the air like a rotting carcass.
Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her chest. “A second... what? Jennifer, watch your tongue! You are making scandalous accusations against your husband!”
“I’m not accusing him of anything, Evelyn,” I said softly, flipping open the cover of the folder to reveal the first set of printed documents. “I am presenting empirical, court-admissible evidence.”
I pulled out the first stack of papers and slid them across the table toward my parents-in-law.
At the top of the stack were full-color printouts of encrypted Messenger screenshots—deeply intimate, undeniable exchanges between Daniel and Chloe. “I felt the baby kick today…” “You don’t need to worry about Jennifer, I have a plan to handle that side of things…”
Arthur snatched the papers up, his eyes scanning the lines of text. As the harsh reality of his son’s betrayal sank in, the stern, imposing patriarch crumpled. The color drained entirely from his weathered face, his hands trembling so violently that the papers fluttered like falling leaves against the tablecloth.
“Daniel...” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking into a broken, disbelieving wheeze. “Tell me this is a sick joke. Tell me you didn't... tell me this isn't true.”
Daniel couldn't speak. He stood frozen, staring down at the floor, beads of cold sweat glistening on his forehead.
Evelyn snatched the papers out of her husband’s hands, her eyes wide with horror as she read the dates, the love confessions, the ultrasound appointments. Then, she pulled out the second stack of documents—the bank transfer receipts detailing the fifteen thousand dollars siphoned from our joint savings to pay for an apartment lease, medical bills, and maternity clothes for another woman.
“Fifteen thousand dollars?” Evelyn shrieked, her voice skyrocketing into a hysterical pitch that turned the heads of every remaining employee in the ballroom. “You stole from your own family?! You robbed your wife and your newborn daughter to fund a whore?! You absolute, disgusting parasite!”
She lunged across the table, swinging her heavy leather handbag directly at Daniel’s head.
Daniel ducked clumsily, stumbling backward over his chair and crashing hard onto the parquet floor, kicking his legs out in a pathetic attempt to shield himself from his mother’s furious assault.
“Mom! Stop! Stop it! Let me explain!” Daniel screamed, covering his head with his arms as Evelyn rained blows down upon his shoulders, crying tears of bitter, humiliated rage.

Arthur sat like a statue, staring blankly at the wall, crushed under the weight of the absolute disgrace his golden-boy son had brought upon the Mercer name.
I remained seated, calm and composed, watching the destruction of the house of cards Daniel had spent months constructing.
