Chapter 6 - The Final Straw

“Get him out of my sight!” Evelyn screamed, breathing heavily, dropping her designer handbag onto the floor as she glared down at her cowering son. “Get him out of this hotel before I kill him with my bare hands!”
Daniel scrambled awkwardly to his feet, his expensive navy suit wrinkled and stained with spilled wine from the table. He looked around the ballroom, realizing in one agonizing moment of clarity that he had lost everything: his wealth, his social standing, his parents’ respect, and his public illusion of perfection.
Finally, his desperate, bloodshot eyes locked onto me.
“Jennifer... please,” he whimpered, taking a hesitant step forward, reaching out a trembling hand. “You have to understand. Chloe didn't mean anything! It was a mistake from the past! She got pregnant and trapped me, and I panicked! I swear to God, I love you and Lily! We can fix this! We can go to counseling! Don't throw our family away over this!”
I stood up slowly, smoothing down the front of my red sheath dress. I picked up little Lily from her carrier seat, cradling her securely against my chest, feeling her warm, steady heartbeat against mine.
“You didn't throw our family away, Daniel, when you had an affair,” I said, my voice cutting through his pathetic pleas with absolute finality. “You threw our family away every single time you looked me in the eye and lied. You threw it away when you stole our daughter’s savings to pay for your mistress’s doctor appointments. And you officially buried it today when you used my pregnancy as a marketing campaign for your own ego.”
I reached into my handbag and pulled out one final document, sliding it across the table toward his feet.
“What... what is that?” Daniel whispered, staring down at the legal blueback cover.
“It’s a petition for divorce, accompanied by a temporary restraining order and an emergency asset freeze,” I stated evenly. “My attorney filed it at eight o’clock this morning. By tomorrow, your bank accounts will be locked, your corporate credit cards will be deactivated, and you will be legally barred from stepping foot within five hundred yards of our home.”
Daniel stared at the paper as if it were a death warrant. “No... Jennifer, you can’t do that! Where am I supposed to go? What am I supposed to do?”
“Go to Chloe,” I said coldly. “After all, you’ve spent the last six months proving how much you care about her family. Now you get to live with the consequences.”
I turned away from him, hoisting Lily’s diaper bag over my shoulder, and began walking toward the grand exit doors of the ballroom.
“Jennifer!” Daniel cried out, lunging after me.
Before he could take two steps, Arthur’s heavy, gravelly voice echoed across the hall, stopping him dead in his tracks.

“Don't you dare follow her, Daniel,” the old man growled, his voice dead and hollow. “If you take one step toward your wife, I will personally disinherit you, strip you of your position at the firm, and ensure you never see a single cent of the Mercer estate again. You made your bed. Now lie in it.”
Daniel stopped, his shoulders slumping in total defeat. He sank slowly to his knees on the floor of the empty ballroom, burying his face in his hands, alone in the wreckage of his own deception.
