Chapter 7 - A NEW HORIZON

The autumn air in Richmond was crisp and clean as November settled over the James River.
Inside the sleek, modern corner office on the twelfth floor of Halverson & Cole Tower, Danielle sat behind a massive mahogany desk. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline stretched out beneath a brilliant blue sky.
Her inbox was organized. Her calendar was clear of chaos. Her team of compliance specialists and financial analysts respected her authority, consulted her expertise, and greeted her every morning with genuine gratitude.
The intercom on her desk chimed softly.
"Danielle?" her executive assistant, Maya, asked cheerfully. "Mr. Halverson is ready for the quarterly budget review in Boardroom A."
"Thank you, Maya. I'll be right there."
Danielle stood up, smoothing the tailored charcoal blazer of her pantsuit. She walked over to the mirror near her private washroom, pausing for a moment to check her reflection.
There was no trace of the tired, overworked wife who had spent twelve years managing a man-child's life in the shadows. The woman in the glass was confident, poised, and entirely self-made.
As she stepped out of her office and walked down the sunlit corridor toward the boardroom, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
It was an automated notification from the county land registry records.
*Public Notice: Notice of Foreclosure Sale – Commercial Real Estate Asset (Formerly Ashford Whitfield Contracting).*
Danielle glanced at the screen, paused for a fraction of a second, and then swiped the notification away.
She didn't feel pity. She didn't feel malice. She felt nothing at all for Desmond Ashford. His chapter of her life wasn't just closed; the book had been permanently shelved and archived.
She pushed open the heavy glass doors of Boardroom A, where several senior executives turned to look at her with eager anticipation.

"Good morning, everyone," Danielle said, her voice clear and commanding. "Let’s get started."
