Chapter 8 - THE LESSON LEARNED

Two miles away from Halverson & Cole Tower, inside a cramped, sparsely furnished studio apartment above a noisy auto repair shop, Desmond Ashford stared blankly at a stack of white envelopes spread across a cheap laminate kitchen table.

Electricity cut-off warning.

Internet service termination notice.

Personal vehicle insurance cancellation.

Thirty-seven bills. Exactly thirty-seven bills.

He didn't have Danielle’s spreadsheet. He didn't have her color-coded calendar. He didn't have a corporate credit card or a loyal business partner to bail him out.

For the past month, he had tried to manage his own utilities, file his own taxes, and renew his own personal insurance policies. Every single attempt had ended in failure, error codes, and automated customer service loops that led nowhere.

His phone rang, jarring him out of his miserable reverie.

He picked it up. "Hello?"

"Mr. Ashford?" a sharp, professional voice asked. "This is collection services representing Apex Commercial Leasing. We are following up on the final judgment regarding your default on the Shockoe Slip design studio lease. A wage garnishment order has been filed against your current employment."

Desmond swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "I... I understand."

"Have a nice day, sir." *Click.*

Desmond dropped his phone onto the laminate table. It slid across the surface and bumped against a past-due electric bill.

He buried his face in his hands, finally letting out the tears he had held back since the day of his divorce party. It wasn't just about the money, or the business, or the condo, or Simone.

It was the realization that he had possessed a treasure—a brilliant, loyal, steadfast woman who loved him unconditionally—and he had thrown her away for a shallow illusion of freedom. He had traded gold for dust, and now the wind was blowing it all away.

He reached out blindly, his fingers trembling as he touched the edge of the electric bill. There was no one coming to save him. No "Dany" to fix the mess.

May you like

He was entirely, permanently on his own.
