Chapter 8 - The Birth of Lily

Three weeks after the purge of the Kane syndicate, on a crisp, crystalline evening in late November, the private medical pavilion on the top floor of The Sovereign was bathed in warm, amber light.

The yacht was anchored in the quiet, sheltered waters off Oyster Bay, completely surrounded by an impenetrable perimeter of private security vessels.

I lay in the center of the birthing bed, my fingers knotted tightly into Roman’s massive hand, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps as the final contraction seized my body.

Roman was kneeling beside me, stripped of his jacket, his white shirt soaked with sweat, his other hand gently stroking my damp forehead, whispering words of unbroken, fierce love into my ear.

"You're doing it, Bianca," he murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You're almost there, my queen. One more push for our girl."

Dr. Sarah Lin smiled warmly from the foot of the bed, her hands steady, clinical, and reassuring.

"The head is crowning, Bianca," Dr. Lin said. "Give me everything you have. Now!"

I pulled back against Roman’s grip, bearing down with every ounce of strength, every drop of courage I had carried through the rain and the cold.

A sharp, breathless cry tore from my throat.

Then came the sound that silenced the entire world.

A loud, furious, indignant wail.

The baby let out her first breath—a clear, powerful, bell-like cry that resonated off the cabin walls like a triumphant brass trumpet.

Tears burst past my eyelids, hot and blinding, spilling down my cheeks as Dr. Sarah Lin lifted our daughter into the warm air.

"A girl," Dr. Lin announced, her eyes shining with joy. "Eight pounds, two ounces. Perfectly healthy, Bianca."

Dr. Lin wiped her clean with a warm fleece blanket and laid our daughter directly onto my bare chest.

The baby immediately stilled. Her tiny, red face burrowed into the hollow of my neck, her small fists flailing against my skin before curling into tight balls against my collarbone.

Roman dropped his forehead against mine, his broad frame heaving with deep, silent, unstoppable sobs of pure, miraculous deliverance.

He reached out with a trembling index finger, gently touching the baby’s tiny, perfect hand.

Our daughter's fingers closed around his knuckle with ferocious, instinctive strength.

"Lily," Roman whispered, his tears splashing onto her fleece swaddle. "Her name is Lily. Because she is the flower that grew after the storm."

I wrapped my arms around both my husband and my daughter, inhaling the sweet, sacred scent of new life, feeling the heavy rhythm of Roman’s heart beating against mine.

The cold was gone forever. The shears were broken. The dark house had been burned to ash, and from the ruins, our sovereign family had risen into the light.
