Chapter 3 - The Child on the Stage

"Chloe," I hissed, scrambling out of my chair, nearly knocking it over as I rushed out from behind the pillar.

She didn't hear me, or she chose to ignore me. She kept walking with steady, purposeful steps toward the professional DJ booth stationed beside the main stage.

Up on the stage, Rachel had just lowered the microphone, smiling graciously as her husband kissed her cheek.

"What is that child doing?" several guests near the front murmured, twisting in their velvet chairs to watch the little girl in the pale blue dress march resolutely up the carpeted steps of the stage.

Chloe climbed the three steps, approached the startled DJ—a man wearing a sharp black vest and headphones—and reached out, handing him the matte-black USB drive.

Then she calmly picked up the secondary wireless microphone resting on his mixing deck.

The professional sound system produced a sharp, piercing feedback squeal that made three hundred guests wince and cover their ears.

Rachel whipped around, her wedding smile vanishing into thin air. "What on earth...?"

Chloe brought the heavy plastic mic to her mouth, her voice echoing clearly through every single speaker in the grand pavilion.

"My aunt said my mom never helps anybody," Chloe announced, her eight-year-old voice ringing out with crystal-clear, unshakeable courage. "She said my mom expects to be rescued. But her real voice is on this."

Panic, pure and absolute, fractured Rachel’s porcelain features. She surged forward down the steps of the stage, her high heels clicking furiously against the wood. "Chloe! Drop that microphone right now!"

Before Rachel could reach the stage, Logan Montgomery—her new husband—caught her firmly by the wrist, stopping her in her tracks.

"Logan, let me go!" Rachel shrieked, her voice cracking as she glared at her husband. "That brat is ruining the wedding!"

Logan didn't release her wrist. His expression had hardened into an impenetrable mask of cool curiosity. He looked up at the stage, then turned his gaze down toward me as I finally reached the base of the stairs, breathless and pale.

The DJ looked down at me, holding the USB drive aloft, waiting for a signal.

I stood slowly, smoothed the front of my dress, and gave him a single, definitive nod.

Rachel shook her head violently, lunging toward the DJ booth. "Do not plug that drive in! It's a virus! It's garbage!"

Logan caught her by the arm a second time, pulling her back flush against his chest. His voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through her hysterics.

"If it's garbage, Rachel," Logan asked, his eyes narrowing as he stared down at his new bride, "why are you looking like you're about to throw up?"

The DJ didn't hesitate any longer. He slid the black USB drive directly into the side port of his primary audio computer.

A digital folder window popped up on the massive seventy-inch LED screen behind the wedding cake—a screen that had been looping romantic engagement photos all evening.

The photos vanished.

Rachel went utterly, bone-chillingly white.
