Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Rosewood Manor

The remaining minutes of the reception dissolved into absolute, unadulterated chaos.
Logan Montgomery didn't yell or cause a physical scene; he simply walked over to the microphone, announced to the stunned three hundred guests that the evening's festivities were concluded, and instructed his private security team to escort our parents and the bridal party off the premises.
As Chloe and I walked down the crushed-stone driveway toward my rusted sedan, the heavy iron gates of Rosewood Manor swung open to let us pass. Behind us, the glittering fairy lights woven through the oak trees suddenly flickered and died, plunging the opulent lawn into darkness.
We got into the car, buckled our seatbelts, and drove out into the cool New York night.
For the first three miles, neither of us spoke. The rhythmic thump-thump of the tires against the asphalt was the only sound inside the cabin.
Then Chloe broke the silence.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, bug?"
"Are we poor?" she asked softly, staring out the window at the passing highway lights.
I reached across the console, taking her small hand in mine, squeezing her fingers gently.
"No, sweetheart," I said, my voice steady and warm. "We are not poor at all. We have our honesty, we have each other, and we don't owe anyone a single dime. That makes us the richest people in the world."
Chloe smiled, leaning her head back against the headrest, closing her eyes as the car hummed steadily down the open road.
Back at Rosewood Manor, the fairytale was officially over. Logan’s legal team filed for an immediate emergency annulment the following morning, citing deliberate financial fraud and systemic deception. The custom Vera Wang gown, the imported orchids, and the multi-thousand-dollar venue deposits became the subject of bitter litigation between the bridal boutique and a disgraced bride locked inside a silent, empty apartment.
My mother called me twice that week, weeping hysterically, begging me to issue a public statement claiming the audio files were AI-generated deepfakes.

I didn't answer her calls. I simply blocked her number, just as I had blocked Rachel’s.
Some relationships aren't worth repairing. Some foundations are built entirely on quicksand, and the moment the truth is applied as weight, they deserve to collapse completely so something honest can finally take their place.
