Chapter 4 - The Domestic Audit

Within ten minutes, the police sirens had faded down the cul-de-sac, the uninvited guests had scattered like frightened mice, and the backyard garden party had transformed into the most surreal crime scene in suburban history.

The only people left on the patio were my sister-in-law, a few close neighbors helping pack up the food, and Alec Vance, who stood casually by the island counter, sipping his sparkling cider as if he hadn't just single-handedly dismantled a white-collar criminal’s entire existence.

I walked over to him, my chest heaving with residual adrenaline, a breathless laugh escaping my lips.

"Well," I murmured, shaking my head as I looked at the spot where Luke had just been zip-tied and hauled away. "That certainly escalated quickly. I thought we were just going to make him feel awkward about his mid-life crisis car."

Alec chuckled, a rich, deep sound that crinkled the corners of his ice-blue eyes. He set his glass down on the counter and looked down at me, his expression softening into something remarkably warm.

"Subtlety is overrated when dealing with sociopaths, Clara," Alec said smoothly. "Besides, Luke’s offshore accounts were flagged by our forensic software three weeks ago. We were just waiting for the right jurisdiction and the right moment to execute the seizure warrants. When you mentioned he was crashing your son’s birthday party to stunt for his mistress... well, timing is everything in federal litigation."

"You planned this," I accused playfully, crossing my arms over my emerald dress.

"I accelerated it," Alec corrected with a charming, lopsided grin. "Can you blame me? I’ve been looking for an excuse to ruin his fiscal life since I read the initial deposition detailing how he cheated you out of your maternity support funds."

I felt a sudden, warm flutter in my chest—an emotion I hadn't felt in years. It wasn't the frantic, toxic spark of a rushed romance, but the steady, anchoring warmth of a man who actually had your back when the world was crumbling.

"Thank you, Alec," I said softly, stepping closer, looking up into his chiseled face. "Really. For everything. Not just the legal work... but for showing up when I felt the most invisible."

Alec’s smile faded into something tender and deliberate. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind my ear, his thumb brushing against my cheek.

"You were never invisible to me, Clara," Alec murmured, his voice dropping into a register meant only for me. "Some people are just too blind to see the treasure they're walking away from."

Before I could answer, the sliding glass door of the kitchen slid open, and my sister-in-law, Sarah—Luke’s sister, who had always despised Tiffany and supported me through the divorce—walked out onto the patio holding a tray of fresh lemonade.

"Well," Sarah announced, a triumphant, wicked grin spreading across her face as she handed me a glass. "That was easily the best birthday party entertainment we've had in a decade. And as for you, Counselor..." Sarah pointed a finger at Alec. "You're officially invited to every family barbecue for the rest of your natural life."

Alec laughed, raising his sparkling cider in a mock toast. "I hold you to that, Sarah."
